1 Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations Fall 2016 BUS Monday & Wednesday 10:00 11:15 a.m. ED623 COURSE OUTLINE Instructor: Sandra Steen Faculty of Business Administration Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the roles and functions of Human Resource Management (HRM). The course takes the perspective that HRM plays an important and growing role in the success of organizations and effective HRM is a shared responsibility of managers and human resource professionals. Learning Outcomes & Objectives: Introduce the fundamental aspects of HRM critical to organizational effectiveness. Provide an introduction to the content knowledge of HRM as a basis for further learning. Provide an introduction to the process knowledge of HRM as a basis for developing abilities to participate in applying strategies and tools. Course Textbook & Readings: Required: (1) Steen, Sandra & Noe, Raymond, et al. (2016), Human Resource Management (Fourth Canadian Edition), Toronto: McGraw-Hill Ryerson. Option 2 uses your UR Courses username and password. You are encouraged to be current on how the issues in this course are "played-out" in actual organizations. It is recommended to regularly read one or several of the popular business publications available in the U of R e-library e.g. Globe & Mail, National Post, New York Times, HRMagazine; Canadian HR Reporter; Harvard Business Review; T+D, Business Week, Canadian Business and/or monitor online sources for news and HR information e.g Instructional Methods: Methods include lecture, collaborative work, and independent study. During many of the classes, we will spend time in group and/or class discussion and/or working in groups This will usually require using the textbook and other assigned readings as a foundation. Your learning and interest will be greatly enhanced by completing the required readings in advance of class. It will also be helpful to bring your textbook (and readings) with you. 3 Other Expectations: You will need to access URCourses regularly to check for s and announcements and to access class materials. Lectures are designed to supplement the text material with an emphasis on application and professional practice. Class attendance is important to doing well in the class. Every class member is critical to our collective learning outcomes, therefore missing class impacts everyone. If you miss a class, it is up to you to get notes, assigned activities, etc. from another participant in the class. Any questions that you have about class content, a graded assignment, or exams must be asked during class so that everyone can hear the response. a) Mid-Term Exam: (30%) Based on the readings in the textbook, assigned readings, class lectures, videos, inclass discussions, and in-class activities. The Mid-Term Exam will be 1.0 hour in length format will be discussed in class. NOTE: If you miss the Mid-Term for any reason, marks will be allocated to the Learner s Reflection & Final Exam (i.e. Learner s Reflection 45%/Final Exam 55%).! October 24, 2016 (CH 1-5) b) Learner Engagement Journal: (30%) Course content and methods are designed to provide you with a thorough introduction to Human Resource Management theories, current issues, and organizational applications. This assignment provides a reward for class attendance and encourages you to become an active (vs. passive) learner. You are accountable for preparing and submitting Participation & Learning Journal entries for each class in the time period: September 14 November 14, 2016 (16 classes excluding the MT) and a summary of your results (2 pages single spaced). A sample template for your journal entries and grading criteria will be provided in UR Courses to guide your approach. Your summary document should provide a concise snapshot of your class attendance, your contributions to the class learning environment, and your analysis/synthesis of topics covered. Your journal entries for each class provide supporting documentation for your summary. This assignment must be submitted using the UR Courses assignment submission tool. NOTE: Please be sure to submit your assignments by the due date as late submissions will be accessed a 20 percent per day grade reduction. Due Date:! November 16, 11:55 p.m. B BUS Fall 2016 Page 3

4 c) Final Exam Take-Home (Individual): (40%) The final exam is comprehensive and will be based on the readings in the textbook, assigned readings, class lectures, videos, exercises, case studies, and/or discussions. Format for the final exam will be provided later in the semester. Note Examination Policy: Anyone who does not electronically submit his/her exam submission by the due date/time will be given a grade of NP in the class.! December 16, 12:00 noon Research Participation: Up to 2% bonus marks can be earned by participating in research studies in the Faculty of Business Administration, however availability of these opportunities cannot be guaranteed.
