2 Job Posting: Editor, Open Minds Quarterly (Sudbury) REPORTS TO: Publishing and Communications Coordinator HOURS AND REMUNERATION: Part-time permanent, 28 hours per week, Mon-Fri weekdays with some evenings and/or weekends. Remuneration based on skills and experience. POSITION SUMMARY: The Editor will edit NISA s literary journal Open Minds Quarterly (OMQ). This position is responsible for soliciting, receiving, editing, proofreading, and selecting appropriate submissions for each issue. The editor is the primary contact with authors and readers. The Editor will also support NISA members participating in The Writers Circle by providing editorial feedback and organizing or facilitating writing workshops at NISA. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide editorial direction to Open Minds Quarterly: Organize and assemble content for a quarterly publication, OMQ, that is reflective of its main purpose, goals and objectives Provide an editorial voice that promotes NISA s mission, vision and values to the readership and to the community. Make editorial decisions regarding content of OMQ. Proofread and edit accepted submissions (poetry, first person accounts, essays, etc.) for OMQ. Establish relationships and oversee volunteer section editors for OMQ. Work with volunteers and members who assist with OMQ publication and its projects. Cultivate a community of readers, contributors and subscribers through editorials, events, writing contests, workshops, social media and other avenues. Represent with integrity, as editor, the voices and needs of people with lived experience of mental illness or mental health challenges. Promote Open Minds Quarterly, NISA, The Writers Circle, and other NISA initiatives locally and in the larger community. Attend to administrative matters related to position: Maintain an up-to-date database of the contributors to OMQ. Maintain files recording all submissions and correspondence. Recruit member volunteers or community volunteers as needed. Connect to community resources and agencies as needed. Administer the annual BrainStorm Poetry Contest and coordinate judging. Participate in fundraising activities. Research various grant opportunities and write grant proposals and reports. Assist with business development of Open Minds Quarterly, in partnership with Publishing and Communications Coordinator: Develop and/or write content for Open Minds Quarterly website, newsletters, social media and marketing materials. Write and edit content for circulation campaigns. Edit NISA s marketing materials, as needed. Continuously explore ways to enhance and increase readership and submissions. Collaborate with Publishing and Communications Coordinator to develop new projects and special issues. Provide editorial and writing assistance to members of NISA participating in The Writers Circle: Provide one-to-one writing support and editorial feedback. Develop writing workshops and other opportunities for NISA members seeking development in the written arts. Provide input on behalf of The Writers Circle at staff and membership meetings. Participate in the evaluation of program goals and objectives, making recommendations on changes to current program activities for improved service delivery. Ensure all file management and reporting functions are maintained in a comprehensive and timely manner: Ensure contacts are recorded appropriately and in a timely manner utilizing available tools and databases. Ensure that monthly, annual and other required reporting documentation are completed. Participate in scheduled meetings with the Publishing and Communications Coordinator. Represent NISA in a professional manner.

3 Maintain up-to-date knowledge of: the magazine and publishing industries; literary matters; mental health issues and research; social justice and disability issues, particularly as they relate to people with lived experience of mental illness. Forward the concepts of peer support practice, and understand and implement a recovery-oriented philosophy in all job duties. Avail self of opportunities for professional development: Bring forward training needs and takes responsibility for seeking out relevant training opportunities. Participate in workshops and seminars as required. Participate in staff meetings. Participate in the performance review process. Work within the Policies and Procedures of NISA/Northern Initiative for Social Action and NISA s Core Values of Peer Support. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Carry out all duties of the Editor in a moral and ethical manner. Be present at the scheduled time of the day ready for the performance of duties. Be ready emotionally and physically to perform duties. Be available to work during NISA s hours of operation, including days with some evening and weekend shifts. QUALIFICATIONS Lived experience within the mental health system Experience in editing, publishing or writing Experience organizing or facilitating workshops Experience providing writing or editorial support A diploma, degree or Canadian equivalent in English, Journalism or a related discipline is considered an asset. Equivalent knowledge and experience may be considered. Computer experience, including an ability to use Word, Excel, Adobe Creative Suite and /internet technologies is mandatory. Office administration experience is preferred. Experience in advocacy or social justice is an asset. Familiar with the goals and objectives of NISA/Northern Initiative for Social Action is an asset. Written and verbal proficiency in both official languages is preferred. 5 SCENARIO QUESTIONS: Position: Editor, Open Minds Quarterly Definition of the Program: Open Minds Quarterly is a literary magazine published four times a year, featuring the writing of people with lived experience of mental illness. In publishing OMQ, NISA aims to reduce and eliminate stigma associated with mental illness. The Writers Circle is a program of NISA in which NISA members are encouraged to pursue personal recovery goals through creative expression and/or explore professional development of their talents and skills in writing. Please answer the following questions, limiting your responses to a maximum of 250 words: 1. The Recovery philosophy is promoted at NISA. A writer calls you to find out the status of their submission, a first-person account about their experience with serious mental illness. You heard back from the reviewer a few days before that this piece is not recommended for publication; the quality of writing does not meet the standards of the magazine. Explain how you will respond to the writer s question and employ a recovery-oriented perspective. 2. You learn from the Publishing & Communications Coordinator that subscriptions have been dropping consistently over a number of months. Describe what you can do as a magazine editor to improve subscription sales and readership. 3. A NISA member who has been working diligently on their memoir for a number of months comes to you and tells you they have decided to quit. Referring to NISA s Core Values of Peer Support, explain how will you respond.
