9 Challenges The results of a Labour Market Study, conducted in 2010, point to several challenges this sector faces in both the near and distant future. An aging, male dominated workforce Overall low perception of Parks and Public Works as a compelling career option Lack of standardized training, training opportunities, and difficulties with current training methods Duplication of training efforts An imminent labor supply shortage

11 Moving Forward In order to move forward, we must address the issues our industry faces today. The main issues raised by our research indicate a clear need to improve: Public Awareness / Profile Recruitment and Retention Methods Unification of Sector Coordinated Training Efforts

12 Training and Career Planning To enable all employees to receive information and training needed to further develop their careers within the sector we must: Consider shared networking of all training resources Training of and access to qualified trainers Standardization of training courses Co-ordination of shared training materials Open access to courses for Parks & Public Works employees across BC Sector managed program development and on-going maintenance Sustain sector support and buy in

13 Training Program Features An industry standard training program would feature the following: Competency-based Cost effective Appeal to current and future workforce Adaptable to K-12 as a recognized curriculum Provide flexible delivery/scheduling options Emphasis on practical, hands on, on-the-job training Recognition of prior learning In-field assessment Coordinated across sector
