1 ROLE PROFILE Job Title: Development Instructor (Adventurous Activity) Band 5 Location: The Prince s Trust Centre - Southampton Introduction to The Prince s Trust Youth charity The Prince's Trust gives practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation. It works with 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed or at risk of unemployment through underachieving in education. The Prince s Trust is an optimistic and ambitious organisation. The Trust works with around 55,000 young people across the UK delivered through three English regions and offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Trust delivers its support to young people through teams of staff, volunteers and delivery partners. Each of the regions and countries has a Director who is supported by a Regional or Country Council, which is made up of nonexecutive volunteers. The Trust supports young people through a range of programmes, and operates a network of centres and partners from where Princes Trust programmes are delivered. Adventurous Activity is a core component of the Fairbridge programme and features as one of the most effective Personal and Social Development mediums across our other programmes. Reports to: Adventurous Activities Manager, with day to day supervision from Senior Development Instructors (Adventurous Activities) Key Relationships: Fairbridge programme staff Head of FB/GS AA Regional Development Instructors Programme Support Co-ordinator in the Centre Service/Site providers and delivery partners UK Head of Adventurous Activities Technical Advisors 1

2 Central Operations Team Other Head Office Functions and Departments as required Accountability: The Development Instructor is accountable for the development of young people through a variety of sessions and courses using adventurous and outdoor mediums. Development Instructors may also be expected training other PT staff as competent assists for activities in which they hold relevant NGB awards as well as support, coach and mentoring volunteers as directed by the Senior Development Instructor. Responsibility: Key responsibilities: To plan and deliver high quality adventurous sessions and activities To work with Programme Executives and partners to plan and deliver adventurous activity sessions which compliment programme as specified in Princes Trust programme toolkits To identify partners and service providers who can enhance Adventurous Activity through provision of appropriate sites and facilities To assist with leading, supporting, coaching and mentoring of volunteers and partners where appropriate To maintain accurate and up to date paper and electronic records Budget: Responsible for allocated delivery expenditure including the hire of facilities and accommodation, resources, rations, and other day to-day running costs. Responsible for maintaining and auditing allocated resources, vehicles and facilities in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and with support from the Senior Development Instructor. Responsible for managing own expenses within the financial management guidelines and allocated budget Detailed responsibilities: 1. Ensure delivery complies with; Princes Trust Standard Operating Procedures, the stages and processes outlined in the relevant programme toolkit, the minimum quality standards and any additional contractual obligations 2. Design appropriate sessions and courses to meet the needs of young people on programme in liaison with Princes Trust Programme Executives and / or Delivery Partners. Assess and evaluate courses and activities, and modify course design and delivery as appropriate 3. Assist with the sourcing of opportunities and development of relationships with other organisations, or service providers, to support a wide range of appropriate adventurous and outdoor activities within programmes 4. Lead the delivery of adventurous activity courses to young people. 5. Deliver designated accreditation courses in line with agreed targets within the Country/Region Business Plan; supporting young people to attain accreditation where possible 2

3 6. Build effective relationships with young people and constructively work with young people s behaviour using Prince s Trust programme theories of learning 7. Complete adventurous activity session/course reports and support programme executives and / or partner with relevant sections of young people s Personal Development Plans, and work collaboratively to identify, monitor and evaluate the development needs and progression opportunities of young people. 8. Assist with ensuring effective communication and flow of information between Development Instructors and programme executives or delivery partner. 9. Maintain and audit allocated equipment, vehicles and facilities in compliance with Adventurous Activities Standard Operating Procedures with support from the Senior Development Instructor. Input into the equipment replacement plan by identifying, prioritising and sourcing equipment and facilities within allocated budget 10. Comply with The Prince s Trust health and safety policy by supervising all young people to ensure their welfare and safety is maintained whilst participating on Princes Trust activity and through promoting a culture of health and safety within the team, carrying out risk assessments on activities 11. Assist with recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers and staff 12. Assist with leading, supporting, coaching and mentoring Princes Trust Executives, Volunteers and partners carrying out observations on the practice, supporting the assessment of competence to assist on Adventurous Activities 13. Support the implementation of multiple external funding contracts or initiatives (local and national) to ensure requirements and outputs are achieved 14. Maintain accurate and up to date records, paper and electronic, as required by The Trust or external funding contracts and in line with The Trust s data protection policy 15. Comply with all Prince s Trust young people policies and procedures 16. Carry out other duties as may reasonably be required by The Trust, including deputising as appropriate on activities relevant to area of responsibility and attending all necessary internal/external training courses and management/steering group meetings Reporting responsibilities: To supply information as required by the Senior Development Instructor or Adventurous Activity Manager. PERSON SPECIFICATION The successful candidate will be experienced in working with young people from The Trust s target group and dealing with challenging behaviour. They must have the ability to facilitate personal and social development of young people through adventurous activity and outdoor learning, and should be able to demonstrate that they understand the challenges that face disadvantaged young people in their area. 4 will also have an enthusiasm and passion for the work of The Prince s Trust and a conviction to deliver high positive outcomes for the young people we support. Criteria Essential Desirable Skills and Knowledge: Strong understanding of the challenges young people within The Trust s target groups face Ability to effectively develop rapport with young people and establish appropriate relationships Ability to deliver high quality group sessions in three different adventurous activities Excellent knowledge of health and safety practices and processes Knowledge of risk management procedures Good planning and organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities Good verbal and non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work both independently and as part of a team Ability to work on own initiative to find creative solutions to problems Strong awareness and understanding of equal opportunities and the ability to translate these into effective action Experience: Demonstrable experience of youth work Competencies and Behaviour Experience of facilitating personal and social development of young people, with awareness of issues affecting target group Experience of leading and delivering adventurous activities Experience of delivering accredited training courses (such as Paddle Sport Start award, John Muir award, NICAS 1 & 2, NNAS Bronze/Silver) IT skills including Word, , Internet Explorer, media packages and use of equipment such as data projector, digital camera, video camera Approachable open minded and value diversity Non-judgemental focus on the potential not the past Inspiring lead by example Empowering enable positive change Passionate absolutely committed to supporting young people Disposition Flexibility to work evenings and attend residential courses as required Knowledge of local provision for disadvantaged young people and the local community Knowledge of local sites & locations to deliver outdoor learning safely Experience of working within a target driven environment 4

5 Criteria Essential Desirable Ability to travel and work frequently across region operating remotely from based location Ability to attend meetings/courses throughout the UK Qualifications A minimum of two NGB qualifications from: Summer Mountain Leader /Walking Group Leader assessed - Single Pitch Award/Climbing Wall Award - L2 Paddle Sports Coach Skills or Training evidence in a third adventurous/outdoor activity First Aid qualification with outdoor focus and relevant to other qualifications (BASP,REC, etc.) D1 driving licence D1 +E driving licence Orienteering Coach Trail Cycle Leader (or Equivalent) Local Cave Leader L1 IOL Bushcraft (or Equivalent) Food Hygiene awareness qualification Other Current clean driving licence (certain points may apply) Satisfactory DBS/PVG check EMPLOYMENT TERMS Grade: Band 5 5
