2 Preparing For The Process Assess yourself! Determine the type of job(s)/position(s), internships you want. Research employers of interest. Create a target list of your preferred employers Become familiar with the industry and terminology. Develop a list of qualifications and strengths: How can you market yourself? What can you offer an employer? Why should they hire you? Research the industry/field (Vault, Hoovers, company site) Starting Salaries. Qualifications. Recruitment season. Job postings.

4 Part I Effective Resume Writing

5 Résume Writing 101 The Basics Flawless it is your ad and a sample of your work. Customized focus on qualifications, strengths, skills and experiences relevant to the position. It demonstrates why you are qualified for the position you are seeking. Eye catching the visual look is just as important as the content. Concise the ideal length should be one page. Markets you should impress the employer to contact you. Guides the Interview it provides a roadmap for your interviews. Multiple résumes are fine have different resumes for different job targets.

6 Tips About the Format Font Style Use Arial or Times New Roman. Font Size 11 or 12 point for text. (14 for headers.) Margins Between.75 and 1.25 inches. Formatting: Use bullets instead of paragraphs. Align text perfectly and be consistent. Use bold sparingly to highlight items such as your name, title and degree.

7 Tips About the Content Attention to Details check for spelling, typos and mistakes. Be Descriptive: Most relevant experience should be detailed. Be specific and descriptive regarding what you did, how often, for whom, why and etc. First few bullets should be relevant/impressive items. Bullets Start with different action verbs. (e.g. prepared, created.) Quantify Use results and numbers. (e.g. how many customers you dealt with, number of new accounts opened, awards won, people trained, cash tallied.) 16 Cover Letters Cover letters that are well written can give you an advantage State why you are interested in the position and the specific company: Show them that you have done your research. Catch their attention in the 1 st paragraph. Address it to a specific individual where possible. DO NOT: Repeat your entire resume. Have spelling errors, typos, mistakes. Project that you are negative, desperate or lacking self confidence. It should not be a general form letter that you are sending to all employers.

Become the Recruiter: Write the resume from the employer s perspective. Know What to Omit: Do not include information that may raise negative questions. Review Before Submitting: Have several people review your documents! Read it out loud do you sound impressive? Online/ Submissions Save documents as a.pdf to keep format consistent. 28 Most Common Types of Interviews Behavioral: Describe the (STAR) Situation or Task, the Action you took and the Results of your actions. Simulation: Demonstrate an activity, skill, or ability needed for the position. A candidate may be asked to take a test, role play, or give a presentation. Group: Interviewers are observing how you interact in a group.

29 Typical Questions Recruiters Ask Tell me about yourself. Why do you think you best qualify for this job? Why are you interested in the position and the company? What are your career goals? What are your strengths/weaknesses? Why did you select your major/brooklyn College? Tip: Review job description for clues on what else they will ask.

36 Before the Interview Be Prepared: Have resumes, letters of recommendations, samples of work, etc. organized to take with you in a nice portfolio. Always carry a pen, money for parking, and other necessities. Write down the details of your appointment and the company (e.g. person you are meeting, address etc). Be on Time: Know how much time you need to get to the interview site. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to the area. Allow extra traveling time. Enter building 15 minutes before appointment. Remember the interview starts the moment you arrive.

37 Before the Interview Learn the proper spelling and pronunciation of the interviewer's name. Research the company. Prepare about 3 to 5 questions to ask. Know your resume and the job description. Review your personal and professional qualifications. Practice interviewing and get feedback. Be confident and focus on the positive. Anticipate the questions. Get a good night's rest.
