2 Backdrop As the number of dual career couples is gradually increasing and the support of the joint family is going away men and women employees are struggling hard to mange their professional and personal lives. Women professionals find it difficult to fulfill demands of the family and society and at the same time do justice to the demands of their profession at workplace. This issue becomes even more pertinent in a country like India where most of the familial roles are gendered. Research suggests that professionals are experiencing a time squeeze, and demographics suggest that this is not going to go away. Work-life balance is about people having a measure of control over when, where and how they work. It is achieved when an individual s right to a fulfilled life inside and outside paid work is accepted and respected as the norm, to the mutual benefit of the individual, business and society. 3 Case studies Group discussion Role play Lecture Faculty Dr. Sanghamitra Buddhapriya, Programme Director is an Associate Professor in the area of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management in, New Delhi. She is a PhD from Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi. She received the prestigious Shastri Indo-Canadian Fellowship and did her postdoctoral research from McMaster University; Hamilton, Canada.She has authored a book on Women in Management and many research articles in refereed journals. Her training interests include areas like work life balance, gender issues at work, stress management, emotional intelligence, leadership & mentoring, interpersonal relationship. She has conducted several training programmes on work-life balance for organizations like NTPC, MMTC, NHPC, and New India Assurance. She also conducts open programmes on this issue and the feedbacks are quite encouraging. She has researched work life issues widely and has published many articles. Recently, her article on work-life balance has been published in Indian Journal of Industrial relations, October 2005 issue titled Balancing Work and life- Implications for Business.
