What Can We Do To Help Deal With Stress?

Basic Needs

Work-Life Balance Is a Journey Each of us have our own personal definition of work-life balance. Once you allow yourself to embrace this reality, it can be both liberating and empowering because we become free to make choices based on what we want for ourselves, not what we feel pressured to pursue on the basis of other people s opinions or what we feel society prefers.

Work-Life Balance Satisfaction Some things to think about as you consider your work-life balance satisfaction level: Time with family and friends Number of hours you work Level of stress related to work Your ability to relax Your ability to explore your hobbies and interests Your quantity and quality of sleep Your level of accomplishment/success Feeling that you are living your life as you want Your level of volunteering for your community Are you happy

Satisfaction Level 3 words to describe level 3 Overwhelmed, wiped-out 4 Stressed and tired 7 Having some fun 2 Need change now 9 Loving life

What are you striving for? A few examples to help you, remember 3 words or less! Efficient and calm Accomplished, effective, fun Work-free weekends Time for me Re-engage with hobbies Healthy, happy, energetic

What is important to me? Top 5

Develop Priorities What is a priority? Why is it important to develop them? What should be do with them? Why have them? What do we do once we have them?

Planning Process Benjamin Franklin supposedly once said, If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. You have clarity on your priorities, but there is often a disconnect between knowing our priorities and doing something with that knowledge

The Push and the Pull On our journey in life towards work-life balance we will come across many obstacles and struggles, we will feel like we are being pushed and pulled at the same time. On the one hand, you will be really going for it (that s the push part) asking of life all that you hope for and imagine for yourself: perhaps a career that you love, personal time outside of work that fulfills and rejuvenates you, connections to your community that give your life meaning, and so on. Then, on the other hand, you will be learning how and where and when to pull back- when to ask less of yourself, when to give less of yourself, and where to cut back!

Creating Boundaries We need to create boundaries so we can discover or rediscover those areas in your life in which you need to pull back from, to make sure you have the time, energy, an other resources needed to bring forth your ideal work-life balance. Boundaries are limits that you set for yourself that allow you to meet your needs, maintain your priorities, and protect your values. Boundaries also include limits that you set for others in how they interact with you

Examples of boundaries When my office door is shut, do not interrupt me (unless it is a life-ordeath situation or a medical emergency) I do not work after 3:00 p.m. on Fridays I do not answer work phone calls, or on Saturday or Sunday I can only contribute two hours per week to community volunteering I will respond to your or voic within thirty-six hours I will not take my laptop on vacation with me I will not miss my child s school performance I will make it a priority to help my children with their school work

Do you lack Personal and Professional Boundaries? People who are not well skilled at setting or maintaining boundaries struggle with the barrier of lack of personal and professional boundaries People who face this barrier have ABSENT boundaries, LOOSE boundaries, or a combo of both! ABSENT: You have not put anything in place to help protect things important to you LOOSE: Some desired boundaries are in place, but they are vague and not functioning effectively

Creating and Tightening Boundaries Specific- you can clearly define the action or lack of action you will take Measurable- you can quantify the boundary and are aware when you are or you are not doing it Attainable- you can actually do it; it is feasible to implement this boundary Realistic- you believe you can uphold it; it is not unmanageable or unreasonable Time-based- you define it within a time frame

Thoughts That Interfere With Boundary-Setting

I don t want to rock the boat because the waves will make me uncomfortable I do it because I can Everyone else manages to do it, so why shouldn t I? I could lose something, instead of gain Why bother?

Manage Your Day Efficiently

What causes my day to be so stressful and inefficient?

Leaks: Causes for inefficient use or management of your day, I call these LEAKS Leaks are defined as actions or lack-of-actions that increase demands on a person s time, energy, and/or focus and shift the person away from his or her priorities, responsibilities, or important to-do items: Multitasking Lack of planning No support structure No delegation Clutter/messy office or work space Social networking black hole

Plug Your Leaks To manage your day more efficiently, there are specific actions that you can do to stop those leaks. These actions are what I like to call plugs. Plugs are both proactive and reactive. Time box is a plug for multitasking Planning time is a plug for lack of planning Get Support is a plug for no support structure Delegation is a plug for no delegation Organize is a plug for clutter/messy office or work space

Engage in Self-Care How would you choose to spend the day if the powers-that-be in your life said to you, Today is a day off. Take the day and do whatever you would like with this day- as long as you spend it in a way that rejuvenates you. No errands, no , no chores, no work allowed! What would you do?????

A closer look at Self-Care Self-Care refers to making choices and taking action in order to increase your PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, SPIRITUAL, and/or SOCIAL WELL BEING. Self-Care is all about you- choosing to do what you want to enhance your energy, happiness, ability to relax, health, attitude..whatever rejuvenates, refreshes, reinvigorates, or relaxes you!

Lack of self-care Examples: Inefficient sleep Inefficient exercise Unhealthy diet or unhealthy snacking for energy Too much caffeine Smoking No downtime No hobbies or nonwork interests No real vacation

What does it require to engage in self-care? The Commitment of time and energy Putting your self first, at times Stay clear on what matters to you Surround yourself with a supportive environment

Thank you so much for attending today! I hope you are walking away with at least one helpful idea!
