Page 2-3 must be reviewed and acknowledged by those employees that have worked in the District but are working at this site for the first time District Health and Safety Program The District recognizes the importance of providing a safe and healthy working environment and implementing practices which reduce the risk of accidents. As such, the District has established and maintained a program of occupational health and safety as an integral part of its operations. The program will include the following: Appropriate safety education and training The enforcement of regulations, rules and procedures The provision of safe work areas The promotion of safe working practices among all employees The Superintendent is responsible for the implementation and continuation of an effective safety program in the District and delegates this responsibility to the Principal at each school. Teachers and Supervisors are responsible for the safe conduct of all activities under their control and all employees are required to know and observe safety rules and procedures and to make effective use of safety practices and equipment in the performance of their work. School District 35 Health & Safety On-Line Orientation Before you are elibible to work in School District 35, you are required to complete the online School District 35 H&S Orientation which covers the following health and safety topics: School Board Policies, including Bullying and Harassment: Awareness and Procedures Roles and Responsibilities Safety committees, right to refuse, reporting injuries, fitness for work, safe conduct, unsafe conditions, personal protective equipment Chemical and Environmental Hazards: WHMIS, MSDS, biohazards, asbestos, indoor air quality Physical Hazards: Slips, trips and falls, fall protection, lifting and carrying, RMIs, equipment safety, restricted areas, noise, housekeeping, driving Emergency Preparedness: Fire safety, School safety alert system, violence, working alone and itinerant staff If you have not completed the School District 35 Health and Safety Orientation or have any questions about any of the material covered in the your Health and Safety Orientations, please notify your Administrator/Manager. Health and Safety Rights and Responsibilities It is important to note that maintaining a safe and healthy working environment involves the participation of all employees in the School District. As such, workers, supervisors, and employers all have specific rights and responsibilities in the workplace with regards to workplace safety. Employee Responsibilities Be knowledgeable in the performance of your duties and comply with District policies and procedures and WorkSafeBC Regulation Perform duties in a manner that will not cause injury to yourself or endanger fellow employees, students and/or the general public Correct unsafe acts and conditions that you observe or report them to you Administrator/Manager Wear approved personal protective equipment where required Report all work-related injuries to the First Aid Attendant and your Administrator/Manager Make health and safety suggestions Set a good example Employee Rights All employees have the right to: Know the hazards of their job Participate in Health and Safety activities Refuse unsafe work and are not be discriminated against for doing so 1

To assist in accomplishing this goal, the following rules have been provided to enable district employees to conduct their jobs correctly and safely. Compliance with these rules is necessary to prevent injury. Employees must abide by all district rules, procedures, and WorkSafeBC requirements. Employees shall inspect their work areas at least daily for safety hazards. Employees shall report safety hazards to their supervisor. Employees shall keep their work areas clean and organized at all times. Fire exits, fire pull stations, fire extinguishers, and fire hose connections must be kept clear and free of obstructions at all times and combustible materials must be kept 1 meter away from these items. Electrical switches, controls and panels must be kept free and unobstructed at all times. First aid treatment is to be obtained promptly for any workplace injury or illness. District employees shall not be permitted to enter or remain on the premises while their ability to work is affected by alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription medications, or non-prescription medications as to jeopardize their health and safety or that of any other person. Employees are not permitted to use chairs, desks, furniture, garbage cans, boxes, fixtures or any other items as a substitute for a ladder. Employees who operate district equipment or district vehicles must do so in a manner that adheres to provincial laws and district standards. Recent law changes now ban use of handheld devices such as cell phone. Employees must not operate any tool, machinery or equipment that is not functioning properly. Any malfunctioning tool, machinery or equipment must be tagged out of service until it is repaired. Smoking and tobacco use is not permitted on district property, property leased by the district or in a district vehicle. Employees must use and maintain personal protective equipment deemed necessary for their jobs or required by regulation. Any defective district supplied personal protective equipment must be returned to the supervisor for repair or replacement. Employees must ensure that all machine guards and safety devices are in place, operational and correctly adjusted. No attempt shall be made to maintain machinery while it is in motion unless authorized to do so, adequate protection is in place and work procedures have been developed. The use of compressed air to clean clothing by employees or students is prohibited. Employees must not perform any work that they are not trained or qualified to perform. Employees must not engage in any risk taking behaviour. To this end staff must not skim board, jump bikes, ski jumps, terrain parks, tricks, etc. during a school sanctioned activity. Employees must use personal protective equipment (PPE) for sporting and outdoor activities as required. For example employees snowboarding must wear an approved helmet and wrist guards 2
