Technology is revolutionising workforce management Enhancing efficiency and boosting profit through technology

Operators face tough workforce challenges this year A recent survey reveals that nine out of ten UK operators already struggle to recruit new staff and more than half expect it to get more difficult after Brexit. Some 24% of restaurants are seeing an increase in employee turnover. 58% expect hiring to become even more difficult after we leave the European Union (EU). Recent research completed by the Institute of Hospitality found more than half of the top 350 restaurateurs surveyed had concerns about their EU staffs right to remain after Brexit. According to a recent KPMG report 1, EU workers comprise of more than 75% of waiting staff within the sector. With all the staffing issues facing hospitality, it is more important than ever that operators have technology available to help with recruitment, staff retention and labour optimisation. Having the ability to streamline staff costs and ensure the right number and type of staff available depending on demand is critical. Operators face a raft of challenges going into 2018: huge business rate hikes for many, food costs, wage bills, spiralling rents, the threat of reduced discretionary spending, a skills shortage, market saturation and the possibility of a finance freeze, depending on how Brexit unfolds. In addition, those operators looking to expand their brand struggle to secure new locations due to high demand. Although many of these challenges are outside of your direct control, it is now more important than ever to choose the right technology to support your business. Technology has evolved in such a way that everything you need to reduce costs, increase revenue and improve guest experience is available at the touch of a button. 1 KPMG report: Labour migration in the hospitality sector.

Nobody does it better Andy Whelan, finance director of bars and restaurant group Arc Inspirations, whose strapline is Nobody does it Better, says: when it came to reviewing our technology, we were focused on a system that would support our staff and allow them to focus on customer experience, whilst supporting our ambitious growth plans. Our values are centered on our people first strategy. We recognise that employees are the lifeblood of our business. We live up to these values by providing them with the best technology. This sentiment runs throughout the hospitality industry as a whole, but it s not easy to implement if you don t have the technology in place to drive employee focus.

Boost morale and service Keeping morale high is one important factor when it comes to retaining staff in any work environment. Hawksmoor says that by implementing the right HR solution, in this case Access People, they have boosted morale and helped eradicate staffing challenges, such as confusion over holiday entitlement, enabling staff to focus on providing the best possible service. In fact, Hawksmoor says that the HR technology immediately eliminated staff queries relating to the calculations of holiday entitlement, avoiding much unnecessary frustration and administration time. Angela Cubillos from Hawksmoor goes as far as to say that: Without question, Access People has enabled us to more than live up to our work hard and be nice to people motto. This doesn t even take into account the enhanced productivity that comes from a best-of-breed solution. If employees spend 15 minutes every day using manual systems, that s 15 minutes that could easily be saved and focus given to a better customer experience, or saved on labour costs. A general manager has so many things to keep on top of with more and more being added daily. When broken down, these tasks make sense; but often when you try to juggle everything in a 10-hour shift on top of having a very busy restaurant/bar/pub, things drop or mistakes are made, unless you have the right technology in place.

Focus on flair Workforce management systems now provide all the technology for all those daily tasks at the touch of a button, so managers and owners do not become administrators and can focus on what they are great at such as running a successful restaurant, bar, pub, club etc. Some 60% of UK employees are engaged in time-wasting tasks, according to Personnel Today. Automating essential admin heavy tasks, such as rotas, timesheets, HR functionality and payroll population and having these available at the click of a button makes admin functions accessible and saves time. Some 60% of UK employees are engaged in time-wasting tasks. Great restaurateurs and general managers aren t necessarily great accountants, and are often employed for their flair and customer service and how they engage the team and put on a great show, but you need the technology to support them and harness that flair. A solution that will tell them what to do and what they need to focus on, while giving them flexibility to manually override the system if needed. Functions embracing national insurance, holiday accruals and rota wage costs has helped empower individual general managers to take complete ownership and control of their own labour costs, by the hour, consistent with demand, for the first time. Employers now have the technology at hand to allow them to offer their team members flexibility. Employees benefit from having the flexibility to update their details, view payslips and rotas, show their availability, apply for vacant shifts and swap shifts independently or by management authorisation, using simple consumer-grade tech.
