1 Position: Reports to: Relationship with: Hours: Based: Salary: Contract: Communications Coordinator National Communications Manager Million Metres Streams Project Manager 40 hrs per week Auckland $47-55,000 pro rata, gross, per annum Two years BACKGROUND The Sustainable Business Network (SBN) is a social enterprise made up of businesses, governmental agencies and organisations located across the country. The SBN was established in October Our vision is Make NZ the Model Sustainable Nation for the World. We work with members to progress their role towards contributing to NZ being a model sustainable nation through four transformation areas: Renewables: Enabling the use of renewable energy Community: Building thriving communities Mega efficiency: Maximising the use of all resources Restorative: Enhancing New Zealand s natural capital We encourage members to actively participate; to be bold, leading their sectors with innovative new business models; and to reshape profit to include wider definitions than simply financial. The SBN office is based in Britomart, Auckland and the team provides a range of services to members delivered both in person and online. Members are encouraged to make a contribution towards our four transformation areas by providing expertise, collaborating on projects, participating in events and conferences, or showcasing their work at our annual Awards and other events.

2 PURPOSE OF POSITION The Communications Coordinator s position has two main components: it is dedicated to assist the Communications Manager in ensuring the look, feel and tone of SBN is in line with and enhances our brand identity. It also focused on overseeing the communications for the Million Metres Streams Project. The Communications Coordinator will help deliver the communications requirements for both SBN and Million Metres utilising a range of written and digital communications as well as social media. TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the National Communications Manager and Million Metres Streams Project Manager in the delivery of a range of written and digital communications for SBN and Million Metres. It is expected that the role will involve working three days a week on SBN communications and two days a week on Million Metres communications. Sustainable Business Network External SBN Communications Write copy for newsletter articles (for newsletter and website). This includes a mix of member case studies and success stories, interviews, articles about sustainable business news from around the world, articles about SBN projects etc. It will involve writing approximately 3-5 articles each week. Interview member businesses for these articles; source images; occasionally take photos and video clips to accompany articles. Source content, write and compile other SBN communications, including Events & Announcements s. These communications include working in a variety of formats, including Word, website (Wordpress), Mailchimp (for newsletters), etc. Proof read a variety of communications. SBN Website Assist with writing copy and in creating digital communications for website. Events promotion Assist with promotion of SBN events, including helping arrange promotional materials (posters, booklets, etc), social media, writing articles for newsletter and website, and writing copy for promotional s. Social Media Assist with social media to communicate with SBN s followers in an engaging, creative way about SBN activities and relevant news items (including posting links, photos and video clips). Social media includes our channels on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Research

3 Assist with research around relevant sustainable business initiatives happening within the member network and/or taking place around the world, and communicate these internally and externally (utilising a range of communications platforms). Million Metres Streams Project The Million Metres Streams Project is managed by the Sustainable Business Network. Million Metres is dedicated to improving the health of New Zealand s streams one metre at a time. With a strong crowd funding element at the core of Million Metres, you ll be building the Million Metres project from infancy to its greatest potential the sky s the limit and creating an unmissable call-to-action for individuals to corporations. To save our streams you ll need: A high sense of urgency and energy To be highly motivated to restore the health of our waterways, the mauri of our awa The ability to communicate conservation issues in an engaging and motivating way To be dynamic, creative and tenacious As part of SBN s Restorative Transformation Area focusing on soil, waterways and food systems Million Metres is an innovative crowd funding website designed to restore the riparian planting of lowland stream banks. See Tasks and responsibilities: Work with Million Metres Project Manager to: Finalise and implement communications strategy Ensure strong and savvy communications on the project Educate field partners, community groups, donors (including corporate) and public about Million Metres Ensure timely and clear communication with current donors and sponsors to keep them informed Have engaging and creative use of social media e.g. Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/others Deal with media and information for field partners/donors/ supporters/sponsors Ensure clear communications internally with SBN team Develop and implement creative promotional campaigns for Million Metres (digitally savvy, film, photography and great messaging, working with designers and artists)

4 Skills required for doing this role well. Excellent communicator This person will enjoy communicating with people at all levels, both in one on one situations as well as with groups. They will have excellent written communication skills and be meticulous about correct usage of grammar, spelling and punctuation. They will also be familiar with a range of digital communications, including websites, images, videos and social media. Enthusiasm SBN is all about transforming the status quo. We need someone with oodles of enthusiasm, with a bounce in their step, and a can-do attitude. They need to be part of an invigorating journey for our members. Enthusiastic teams are committed to their goals and express this commitment through optimism. Enthusiasm is contagious and we need that if we are to create change. Superb organisational skills This is a busy role with many aspects associated with communications. It is essential that the person has a high level of organisational skills and self-management. Integrity One of the most important things for all SBN staff is that his or her actions, and not words, set the modus operandi for the work. Good leadership has to be shown through on-going commitment to, and demonstration of, ethical practices consistently through all SBN work. Business Acumen The SBN is a business focussed organisation and it is crucial the Communications Coordinator has a good understanding of, and is comfortable working in a business environment and in operating in a commercially focused way. Empathy Transforming business isn t an easy job and at times empathy for the situation and challenge for others will be a key skill required. Compliance Compliance with all Health and Safety procedures as defined by the Health and Safety Act.

5 Compliance with all company policies and procedures. Any other duties as and when required by the employer. The job description outlined while specific is not exhaustive. In the course of the employee s employment with SBN the employee shall carry out all tasks diligently, responsibly and with regard to the best interests of the employer. The employee shall become properly familiar with and follow all procedures of the employer established from time to time. The employee shall observe in all respects the directions and instructions given by the Director or which may be properly given by an officer or employee of the employer having authority to give such directions or instructions to the employee.
