1 GARY KAPLAN & ASSOCIATES EXECUTIVE SEARCH POSITION SPECIFICATION TITLE: CLIENT: Manager, Security Operations The J. Paul Getty Trust The J. Paul Getty Trust is an international cultural and philanthropic institution that focuses on the visual arts in all their dimensions, recognizing their capacity to inspire and strengthen humanistic values. The Getty serves both the general public and a wide range of professional communities in Los Angeles and throughout the world. Through the work of the four Getty programs the Museum, Research Institute, Conservation Institute, and Foundation the Getty aims to further knowledge and nurture critical seeing through the growth and presentation of its collections and by advancing the understanding and preservation of the world s artistic heritage. The Getty pursues this mission with the conviction that cultural awareness, creativity, and aesthetic enjoyment are essential to a vital and civil society. As a non-profit private foundation, The J. Paul Getty Trust is an exempt organization under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Getty operates at two sites, the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty Villa in Malibu, as well as on the Web. With two physical locations, the Getty serves a wide variety of audiences through its expanded range of exhibitions and programming in the visual arts. The Getty Center, a dramatic hilltop campus in Brentwood designed by Richard Meier, opened in 1997 and celebrates its tenth anniversary in The Getty Villa in Malibu, the original location of the J. Paul Getty Museum, reopened in early 2006 with a new mission as an educational center and museum dedicated to the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. Combined attendance at both sites is estimated at 1.7 million visitors annually. For more information about the J. 2 Page 2 POSITION CONCEPT: SPECIFIC DUTIES: The Manager, Security Operations, serves as one of six senior members of the Getty s security operations management team who work in a coordinated fashion to protect the Getty visitors, staff, and collections, and to ensure that all required policies and procedures are followed at the Getty Center and Getty Villa with regard to the security function. This individual will also lead a team of security supervisors and officers in achieving a high level of service and support to Getty staff and visitors. This individual should demonstrate the flexibility to balance adherence to necessary rules and regulations with sound judgment to recognize how to apply these in a given or unique situation. The role requires the ability to recognize when and how to consult with key members of the administration (including legal counsel); to problem-solve and think on one s feet; and then to act strategically and decisively when needed. 1. Manage the activities of a department with budget, planning, and staffing accountabilities. May also manage a significant policy area with broad programmatic or Getty-wide impact. 2. Establish department objectives and appropriately delegate assignments to subordinates. 3. Interpret, execute, and recommend modifications to department or division policies. 4. Apply extensive knowledge of area of expertise used by supervisory, professional, lead, or project staff. 5. Provide direction based on organizational goals and policy. 6. Act as an advisor to staff members to meet schedules or resolve technical or operational problems. 7. Establish operating policies and procedures affecting areas of responsibility. 8. Ensure that projects are completed on schedule and within budget. 9. May provide recommendations that advance programmatic or organization-wide policy agenda. 10. Serve as a technical resource.

3 Page Apply extensive knowledge of technical concepts, theories, and underlying concepts used by supervisory, professional, lead, or project staff. 12. Demonstrate knowledge of the organization and seek information regarding trends affecting area(s) of responsibility. 13. Set assignments based on overall programmatic objectives. 14. Frequently interact with subordinate supervisors, internal/external contacts, immediate management, and/or peer group managers. 15. Facilitate interactions between departments, divisions, and/or internal/external contacts and the institution. 16. Ensure that internal/external contact and visitor needs are assessed, addressed, and met. 17. Develop sound and effective solutions to departmental issues and problems. 18. Utilize appropriate resources to address and resolve department problems. 19. Review and manage performance of subordinate employees. 20. Deliver pay increases and provide feedback regarding career opportunities. 21. Authorize new hires and terminations for department. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of five years of management experience and a proven track record as a successful leader in a complex and large operations environment, perhaps with multiple sites. This individual will have the personality profile to fit into a competency-based culture which requires teamwork, an entrepreneurial style, bureaucratic avoidance, and significant interaction with employees at all levels as well as the general public. The final candidate will be a mature, bright, creative, energetic, and articulate leader. Ideally, this person will be accepted and recognized as an individual who has the tact and persuasiveness necessary to influence, motivate, and guide the efforts of the supervisors reporting to him or her. The successful candidate will share our client s commitment to excellence.

4 Page 4 Must have demonstrated skills in security administration, budget management, emergency preparedness methods and processes, personnel development, strategic planning, and policy development. Must have an understanding of all issues related to the security and safety of a large public institution with a culturally diverse population of staff and visitors. Knowledge and experience of the specific security issues related to an institution with a strong research presence is preferred. Must have the background and experience, as well as the proven skills, to generate the respect and trust of staff and senior administration, and the support of the Getty community generally. Will project a serious respect for and will hold people accountable to the law and the rules of the Getty, while maintaining a positive relationship and an approachable demeanor with staff and visitors. Will not be overly influenced by or reserve special treatment for particular interest groups or constituencies. A working knowledge of emergency response issues. Excellent project management skills and the ability to diagnose and develop viable solutions to solve problems and meet goals. Solutions should recognize the characteristics of this unique and evolving organization. This individual must have a realistic view of change, and ample patience in guiding changes through an evolving organization. Ability to utilize computers as a tool and have a comfort level with technology systems relevant to security services. Outstanding leadership ability combined with a depth of intellect, and an appreciation for human dynamics. Ability to upgrade the morale and credibility of the department. We seek a pragmatic leader and a team player who clears paths to resolutions by resolving conflicts. This individual must lead by example. Effective managerial skills are required, including the ability to set goals and objectives and monitor performance. Will be a good mentor and coach with the ability to build teams, and develop and empower employees. Must treat people with dignity while promoting an effective climate, good morale, and cooperation.

5 Page 5 Demonstrated success in managing and motivating a multi-ethnic work force of varied educational backgrounds. This individual must be decisive, results-oriented, willing to take action, and be capable of implementing strategy within appropriate deadlines. A strong service orientation and the ability to transmit that priority to all employees within the institution. Outstanding written and verbal communications skills to include the ability to deal effectively with all levels of people within the Institution and to relate in an open, direct, and informal manner. Strong, diplomatic interpersonal skills and an ability to realize that objectives will be achieved mainly through the efforts of others. Will possess an independent, self-sufficient style. Should be a selfmotivated problem solver. Must have the ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. The individual should be a mature, well-balanced, politically astute (but not political) professional who is bright, creative, dynamic, and diplomatic. A strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one s work. The successful candidate will be a highly energetic individual with the highest ethical and professional standards.
