1 Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) is searching for staff members to contribute their talents to our campus community. Grounds Manager Direct proper care and maintenance of college grounds including the athletic facilities, supervise the maintenance of the College Vehicle fleet, and manage all trash collection and disposal throughout the campus. Supervision of grounds staff involves working outside in all types of weather conditions. Some time is spent indoors performing administrative procedures. Essential Functions Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 1. Plans, develops, prioritizes, and manages efficient, and economical grounds maintenance tasks and horticultural programs in accord with the seasonal calendar, the College calendar, and with current weather conditions to assure that ascertained levels of appearance, plant health, cleanliness, and public safety are attained on a daily basis. 2. Establishes and maintains direct personal contact with a wide spectrum of College community members affected and/or concerned with the quality, safety and appearance of the exterior Campus or other property. 3. Consults with the College with regard to concerns about maintenance frequencies, standards, appearance, disturbance, etc. 4. Consults, coordinates and plans with numerous College Departments and organizations to provide support service for a wide variety of events, programs, official functions, recreational activities, etc. Plans, develops, and manages related work in an efficient and economical manner to support such service. 5. Establishes and maintains a system of records to include a correspondence file, a project file, a technical update file, an equipment history and preventive maintenance file, and a personnel file to include attendance and training history. Participates in establishing and maintaining a task-related grounds maintenance inventory and maintains appropriate records. Participates in the Department computerized work management system, and utilizes pertinent management reports to schedule, evaluate and improve plant health, general landscape appearance and work performance.

2 6. plan, schedule and record all grounds maintenance efforts including: mowing, fertilization scheduling through outsourced contractor, minor pruning, athletic field preparation/lining and equipment preventive maintenance. 7. Inventory and requisition supplies, tools and parts as needed. 8. Organize and direct all snow removal including parking lot plowing, salt spreading, brooming and shoveling by hand. 9. Supervise the preparation of seed beds, plantings and transplanting. 10. Insure that all grounds care is performed with all safety and applicable regulations taken into consideration. 11. Inspect all grounds care operations to insure quality control. 12. Manage care and maintenance of all plantings and coordinate the ordering and installation of all annual seasonal flower plantings. 13. Provide and maintain proper trash disposal containers, outdoor seating, walkways and paved surfaces. 14. Empty outside trash containers and keep all properties free of litter. 15. Responsible to maintain and repair all campus drives and parking lots and make recommendations regarding long-term care and preventive maintenance. 16. Coordinate all moving of dorm and office furniture as well as folding tables and chairs for campus events as requested via the department s work order system. 17. Supervise College vehicle fleet through the Department of Security which includes proper servicing, maintenance and cleaning for all vehicles and grounds equipment. 18. Work with the AVP of Facilities & Planning to establish weekly and monthly priorities for the campus grounds as well as making purchases of grounds materials and equipment to properly maintain the campus grounds. 19. Provide budget and capital equipment requirements. 20. Supervise, train and manage all employees including staff and student workers. 21. Develop an annual work plan which identifies goals and expected accomplishments for the year. 22. Must be able to recognize and settle conflicts between staff members which cause the quality of their work to suffer. 23. Inspect work of personnel assigned, and direct corrective measures to insure satisfactory performance. 24. Employ persons to fill vacancies as they occur. 25. Should also be willing to listen and counsel with employees on matters not related to the job, but which may have an effect on their work: Care should be taken in this area; while some employees prefer to keep their personal lives private, others may be offended if the supervisor does not take the time to listen. 26. Assist other Facility Services personnel as assigned.

3 Qualifications/Experience High School education, college education in a horticultural field is preferred. Must hold a current Pennsylvania Driver's license. Ability to understand and comprehend horticultural manuals and other professional materials related to job duties and responsibilities. Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of grounds management and supervision; applicable grounds management and landscape maintenance principles and techniques; work order systems; MS office and excel; organizational and planning skills; customer service. Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills. The position reports to the AVP of Facilities Management & Planning who works with the incumbent to develop performance goals and objectives. Competencies 1. Initiative. 2. Leadership. 3. Supervisory Responsibility Manage, plan and supervise the work of grounds staff Motivate people to accomplish goals of the department Can work with and for other people Interpret and follow State and Federal regulations on various sprays and chemicals Follow directives and instructions and be flexible. Must be a mature individual who possess leadership, honesty, and dependability. Must be able and willing to work longer hours when emergencies arise and deadlines must be met. Willing to provide pleasant, efficient service to the College community. Must Handle stress situations and demonstrate flexibility at all times. Communication skills are essential. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with

4 hands and arms. The employee will be required to be in construction zones and other maintenance areas located throughout the campus to properly perform their work duties. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Position may require 24/7 availability based on campus needs for emergencies or other large campus events to properly manage the college staff.
