With your time: Create a timeline for reaching goals Set aside time each week How many hours per week do you plan to spend looking for a job? 3 Increase your success rate by: Use multiple strategies to find your job. Finding out who is making hiring decisions Tailoring your cover letter and resume Calling to follow up Develop list of targeted employers Locate company websites-- Jobs/Careers section Follow guidelines/directions carefully Gather as much information as possible Development 3

4 Networking Over 85% of the jobs in today s job market are not heavily advertised Personal networking remains the number one way people obtain employment 76% of successful job searches were attributed to personal contacts Networking Network with warm contacts Warm contacts on average include about 50 people you already know--who are they for you? Each of those 50 people knows 50 or so other people Keep your warm contacts informed on what you are looking for Friends Parents of Friends Advisor Faculty Members Student Development Staff (RA) UK Alumni Former co-workers Relatives Neighbors Family acquaintances Organization members Former Teachers Former employers Explain your circumstances Graduating in May with Engineering degree and looking for a position in Ask if they know of, or anticipate, any openings in their setting Ask how they make their openings known Ask if you could send your resume Get additional referrals, if possible Development 4

7 Be careful: Don t post content on your or your friends sites you don t want your employer to see Be discreet: Consider setting your profile to private so you control who sees your site Be prepared: Check your profile regularly to monitor comments. Google your own name periodically to see what comes up. Be prepared to respond to questions. Particularly the Labels to view which companies are attending which event = EGR/CS: engineering & computer science BUS: business or EGR/CS & BUS: both events Career Fair+ Add the employer to you favorites and make easier to locate on map during the event Don t forget to use the filters Visit the App Store or Google Play Store to download Interactive floor map to save favourite employers Receive Real-time Announcements & Notifications View internship, co-op and job postings Get details about both career fairs Explore all the bottom tabs they are loaded with great information!
