Introduction This booklet has been produced by the Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM), to inform OTHM Delivery Centres and Learners about the delivery and assessment of the OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management qualification on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) is a UK based Awarding Organisation approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation). 1.1 Regulation Dates Regulation Start Date 13/02/2015 Operational Start Date 01/03/ Qualification Structure Qualification Title OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management (QCF) Qualification Ref. Each unit within a qualification will also have unit reference number. The qualification and unit reference number will appear on learners final certification documentation. The OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management (QCF) is suitable for learners who have already gained an OTHM Level 3 diploma qualifications or who have qualifications at the level of GCE/GCSE or equivalent. It is also suitable for mature learners with relevant work experience. This qualification will help team leaders and supervisors and those who want to rise to the first tier of management. You must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the course. 1.4 Progression On passing the OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management (QCF) learners will be eligible to be considered for the OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management (QCF). Learners must pass all level 4 units to be eligible to join the OTHM Level 5 Diploma. 3

4 1.5 Language The qualification is offered in the medium of English. 1.6 QCF level descriptor This qualification has been designed to suit learners working towards level 4 qualifications. The regulators Ofqual, CCEA and DCELLS have described the knowledge and understanding, application and action, and autonomy and accountability required of a learner at this level in the booklet Regulatory arrangements for the Qualifications and Credit Framework (August 2008). 1.7 Level 4 QCF descriptors The descriptor for this level is: Level 4 Summary Achievement at level 4 reflects the ability to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to address problems that are well defined but complex and non-routine. It includes taking responsibility for overall courses of action as well as exercising autonomy and judgement within fairly broad parameters. It also reflects understanding of different perspectives or approaches within an area of study or work Knowledge and understanding Application and action Autonomy and accountability Use practical, theoretical or technical understanding to address problems that are well-defined but complex and non- routine. 5 2. Qualification overview The OTHM Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management qualifications is a Level 4 qualification according to the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). To achieve the Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management, learners must complete all 6 units giving 120 credits. Unit Ref. The qualifications are criterion referenced, based on the achievement of all the specified learning outcomes. To achieve a pass for a unit, a learner must have successfully passed all the assessment criteria for that unit. 2.7 Recognition of Prior Learning and Achievement Within this suite of qualifications, learners have the opportunity to build their achievements from a single unit into a composite qualification. Learners may apply to claim for credit transfer and exemption where they have completed relevant units and qualifications from other Awarding Organisations. Credit transfer in the QCF will be based on confirmation of achievement of QCF units. 6

7 3. Centre Approval OTHM Delivery Centres must pass through the OTHM centre approval process to become an OTHM Recognised Centre for the units before offering any QCF qualifications. The unit should be studied within the context of local, national and international constraints on business structure, objectives and environment. Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria Learning Outcome - The learner will: 1 Consider the function of accounting within different types of tourism and hospitality businesses 2 Describe accounting principles and the documents involved in financial transactions. 3 Explain how a trial balance and adjustments are used to prepare a Statement of Comprehensive Income and a Statement of Financial Position. 4 Explain how an organisation should manage its fixed working capital. 14 7. Results and Certifications The grade descriptors Pass is awarded to successful candidates only. Grade Descriptors incorporate characteristics intended to provide a general indication of assessment performance in relation to each Unit s Learning Outcomes in this specification. The final Unit grade awarded will depend on the extent to which a candidate has satisfied the Assessment Criteria. A qualification is awarded when the candidate has achieved at least a pass in all Units. Certificates are dispatched to Centres. 8.
