1 JOB TITLE: Recreation Coordinator Aquatics FLSA Status: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation DIVISION: Recreation Job Summary: In collaboration with the Assistant Recreation Director, plans, directs, organizes, and implements all aquatics activities for the City of Rifle and manages the maintenance, care, and operation of aquatics facilities and equipment. Assists with youth and adult programs during the off-pool season. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; and that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations. Assists with planning, promoting, coordinating, directing, supervising, evaluating, and modifying applicable recreation program(s). Direct supervision of seasonal pool staff as it relates to hiring, termination, training, enforcement of policies, patron and employee accident reporting, disciplinary actions and scheduling. Maintaining pool chemical log and records retention. Plans, promotes, implements, coordinates, directs, supervises staff, and evaluates aquatics programs. Plans, develops, implements, and oversees special aquatics programs for both the City and outside organizations that schedule facility use. Promotes and markets aquatics programs; coordinates activities with/for community schools, groups and organizations; schedules special programs and establishes registration procedures for participants in programs. 2 Analyzes program participation and community needs for aquatic program expansion and improvement. Coordinates support services -- schedules classes for staff members, schedules regular maintenance of facility and equipment, and provides training for safety of facilities and personnel. Supervises and coordinates pool facility maintenance and manages/monitors the associated costs. Recruits and selects seasonal staff; supervises and coordinates schedules for regular and temporary employees as well as volunteers; and trains staff on policies, procedures and service requirements. Evaluates Art Dague Pool staffing requirements and directs/participates in staffing decisions; provides training for employees; monitors and evaluates employee performance; and identifies needs for professional development. Administers program and subprogram budgets including outside contracts with vendors. Assists with seeking funds for recreation programs and facilities through sponsorships. Represents the department with the public and with outside groups, organizations, and agencies; responds to a wide variety of questions, comments, and/or concerns; resolves related complaints. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and/or reports related assigned programs, including financial reports that summarize and/or outline incoming and outgoing funds. Publicizes and promotes aquatics programs using a variety of media sources; oversees the distribution and/or dissemination of promotional materials. Creates program schedules and activities calendars; schedules City-owned fields for applicable programs and outside organization programs. Other Duties and Responsibilities: May be required to provide water safety instruction to staff. Page 2

3 May assist in coordinating and scheduling the use of Re-2 School District Facilities. May represent the City in various capacities on panels, committees, task forces and relevant forums as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned. Experience and Training: Minimum Education: Associates Degree or 3 years related experience in the recreation Administration, Leisure Services, Physical Education or a directly related field preferred. Combination of education and/or experience in directly related field may be substituted for degree. Job Requirements: Valid Colorado Driver s License or ability to obtain with six months of hire. Must be able to pass a background check with results that are acceptable to the City of Rifle. Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required. Job Certifications: Aquatic Facility Operator certification or Certified Pool Operator, Certification as a Water Safety Instructor Trainer preferred or ability to obtain within six months of hire. As well as Life Guard Instructor certification, American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Trainer certification, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Work Experience in Positions Similar or Related to This Job: At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in recreation administration. Two years as a team leader or supervisor preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of recreation program planning, supervision, development and administration; knowledge of the recreational needs of special populations. Knowledge of the principles, practices and operating requirements of aquatic recreational operations, including management requirements such as regulatory and training standards and budget and financial reporting. Knowledge of marketing theories, principles, and practices. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to handle stressful situations applying diplomacy and tact in the resolution thereof. Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices and to use resourcefulness in identifying and solving new problems. Knowledge of customer service principles. Knowledge and application of safety procedures. Skills in coordinating the work to be performed and providing performance feedback. Page 3

4 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with employees, supervisors and the general public. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations, policies, rules, and regulations. Reporting Relationships: This Position Reports to: The Assistant Recreation Director. This Position has Supervisory and/or Management Responsibility for: Assigned seasonal recreation staff and Aquatics personnel. Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer, printer, copier, telephone, two-way radio, cell phone, aquatic facility equipment, and lifesaving tools and equipment. Physical Requirements: Ability to conduct activities involving walking 25% of the time, standing 50% of the time, and sitting 25% of the time. Ability to conduct activities involving balancing, stooping, kneeling/bending, crouching, crawling, twisting, and reaching on a frequent basis. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., push or pull up to 75 lbs. on a regular basis. May be required on an infrequent basis with assistance to lift or stabilize the weight of an adult person. Ability to work with hands above shoulder height and with arms extended at shoulder height with up to 50 lbs. is required on a moderate basis annually. Ability to participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone/radio and to distinguish voice, signals, and other auditory tones. Ability to distinguish objects in low and bright light using visual capacity including peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and far and near acuity in order to observe all elements to respond as the situation demands. Ability to operate vehicles. Environmental Requirements: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment; may occasionally require work with exposure to pool chemicals, dust, noise, and other contaminants or pathogens.
