1 APPLY HERE About the role NCS Team Mentor - Hertfordshire We are looking for lively and dedicated Team Mentors to supervise and support a team of 15 young people to participate in the National Citizen Service (NCS) Programme. You will work as part of a committed team to achieve the NCS programme outcomes - and help to ensure compliance with all partnership policies and such relevant legislation as affects this programme e.g. safeguarding, equal opportunities, health and safety, data protection. This role is based in Hertfordshire.

2 What is NCS? The National Citizen Service (NCS) is an exciting voluntary programme that offer year olds the chance to gain skills, meet new people and give back to their local communities. NCS is part of the Government s vision for building a Big Society. Elevation Networks will be delivering the NCS programme for year olds living, working or studying in Nottinghamshire and Hertfordshire over the next 3 years. The NCS programme is a great programme that helps young people build skills for university, work and life, while taking on new challenges and meeting new friends. Role Details Contract Length: Temporary contract (four consecutive weeks across summer) Location: St. Albans and surrounding areas Reporting To: Programme Manager Salary: 690 per 10.5 day role / 103 hours This will cover the following: Two full days of training in May/June (subject to our availability of dates) Phase 1 (5 day residential away from local area) Phase 2 (5 day residential close to local area) Phase 3 (8 day non-residential within local area) Graduation (1 day/evening on a weekend in September) The NCS Programme is split into four phases.

3 NCS Team Mentor - Hertfordshire About the Programme: The Phases The National Citizen Service is divided into 4 phases: Phase One (Outward Bound Residential): Full-time (4 nights, 5 days: Mon Fri) residential week away from participants local community, with a focus on teamwork and outdoor physical challenges. This provides an opportunity for personal and social development through a series of physical and mental challenges to push participants out of their comfort zones. (All food, transport and accommodation are provided during this phase of the programme). Phase Two (Community Residential): Full-time (4 nights, 5 days: Mon - Fri) residential week based in participants home community, with a focus on developing new skills and serving groups in the community. Accommodation is typically similar to University style accommodation and all food, transport and accommodation are provided during this phase of the programme.

4 About the Programme: The Phases Phase Three - Social Action Project (8 days over two weeks, Tuesday-Friday): Young people design a social action project which will leave a positive legacy in consultation with the local community. This phase is not a residential and is timetabled Tuesday-Friday of weeks 3 and 4. Team Leaders play a key role in managing and empowering their team to create a successful and meaningful project. (Accommodation is NOT provided during this phase of the programme) Phase Four (Graduation): An event to celebrate each young person s achievements and experiences from National Citizens Service. This event is held on a weekend in September and within the local area. Team Leaders are required to attend and ensure maximum attendance from their team.

5 Core Responsibilities Assist with the coordination of a team(s) during the residential phases of the programme Ensure all health and safety protocols are followed in line with project guidelines Guide team discussions and tasks in accordance with project outcomes Support Team Leader(s) with challenging behaviour and building a team rapport Be a positive role model at all times Facilitate some ice breaker sessions and/or assist with the guided reflection activities Support the evening duties during the residential phases Complete data returns as needed to provide statistical and qualitative feedback about the NCS programme throughout its duration as instructed by the Programme Manager Contribute to staff meetings and share ideas with other members of the delivery team Work within the ethos of the NCS programme and Elevation Networks values

6 Person Specification: Skills, experience and knowledge Essential A passion and enjoyment for working with young people An understanding of the needs of year olds and how to engage them Experience of working in a fast-paced and demanding environment Excellent communication and team building skills Good spoken and written communication Attend one training date prior to the programme start Be optimistic and have a positive outlook Desirable Experience of volunteering or working with young people aged 16/17 specifically Previous knowledge/experience of the NCS programme Experience of fundraising or managing an event Experience of working directly with young people with disabilities A current first aid qualification A youth work qualification A recent and valid DBS certificate (enhanced or standard) Previous training in child protection or safeguarding This role will require an enhanced level DBS check (formerly known as CRB) and an understanding of safeguarding.

8 Programme Dates Wave 1: Monday 27 th June Friday 22 nd July 2016 Wave 2: Monday 4 th July Friday 29 th July 2016 Wave 3: Monday 11 th July Friday 5 th August 2016 Wave 4: Monday 25 th July Friday 19 th August 2016 Wave 5: Monday 1 st August Friday 26 th August 2016 It is advised that you indicate which of the above programmes you would like to be placed on at the earliest time (application form if possible). You will not be required to work on weekends during the residential parts on the programme. Your pay will be inclusive of any dates worked as part of the programme. 10 Safeguarding Requirements Elevation Networks is committed to safeguarding the welfare of all young people participating in our programmes. We expect all of our staff to share this commitment and have an understanding of safeguarding. As part of this requirement, all roles will be subject to returning an enhanced level DBS check (formerly known as a CRB). If you do not already have a standard level DBS certificate, Elevation Networks will assist you with the application and cover the cost of processing the DBS check if your job application is successful.

11 Pre-programme Activities and Training PRE-PROGRAMME ACTIVITIES Before the programme begins, we will be running a number of pre-programme, or keep warm events. These will engage young people who are about to start the programme, break the ice and introduce young people to each other and delivery staff by taking part in fun energisers. You will be expected to attend at least one of these events before starting the programme to give the young people the chance to meet with you informally. Refreshments will be provided and dates will vary according to the programme date that you are working on. TRAINING For all NCS staff, up to 2 days (nonresidential) training will be provided to introduce you to the programme and provide key information on delivery, safeguarding and best practice. This training is a mandatory part of the recruitment process and we expect all staff to participate fully and demonstrate behaviour that is in line with our organisational values. Failure to do so may result in withdrawal of an offer of employment.
