Self-Scheduled PDP Point Opportunities Managing Your Job Search (10 PDP Points) Students can earn 10 PDP points by scheduling and working through the steps below with a Business Career Services (BCS) Career Specialist. Making an appointment in advance and completing work in preparation for that appointment is required. Students do not need to be BCS members in order to complete this workshop for PDP points. Special attention needs to be paid to blackout dates for scheduling with BCS, and to cutoff dates for when points will count toward a specific semester. Submissions after the deadline will have points awarded to count toward the following semester. Follow each of these three (3) steps in order to earn 10 PDP points for the selfscheduled Managing Your Job Search workshop: 1. Review the presentation and notes on the topic of Managing Your Job Search that follow these instructions. You must review this presentation prior to your appointment with BCS in order to earn PDP points. Be sure you click Comments in order to see Presenter Notes! 2. Appointments are subject to the availability of Career Specialists, so you are encouraged to schedule early. 7 There are no set rules Each company runs at their own pace, have their own intervals, and work on their own timeline. Job-seekers must work smartly: Be Proactive Network Feed the process regularly Work in many channels Gather information & Adapt

In-Person Career Fairs, Info-Sessions, Recruitment Events, BCS Events, Emphasis Days, Lecture Series, Guest Speakers, etc. Referrals Company reps, family, friends, faculty, peers, associations, etc. **NETWORKING** Online CSO Niche-specific Job Boards Direct Company Websites/Contacts Social Media (LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.) Publications Associations, Journals, Magazines, Newspapers, etc.

Recommended Strategy: 1. CSO TCoB exclusive Are you a BCS member? 2. Social Media LinkedIn Facebook/Twitter 3. Direct Company Sites Meta-Searches, Book of Lists, Rankings (Fortune/Forbes) Chambers/local realtors great resource! 4. Beware of Job Boards Bigger is not always better Use Alerts to manage it

These can be very effective. Over half of the companies on CSO use Social Media in some way. Mainly Branding, but some recruitment as well. LinkedIn Networking (people/groups) and Postings Facebook becoming fans of companies is a good way to express your interest in them/their products. Twitter following companies can keep you up to speed on current news, recruitment events, schedules on campus, etc.

NETWORKING School Career Fairs, Panels, Workshops, Conferences Organizations Speakers, Alumni, Peers Personal Parents, Friends, Churches, Neighbors Community Chambers, Realtors, Philanthropies

Any job that has any interest to you Right location / industry / company / etc. Long-term vs. Short-term Rank it: Anything at a X out of 10, or higher Interviews (if received) will share much more than the posting can include You can t be considered, if you don t apply Likewise, applying to a job is not a binding contract to start working it s an expectation that you d take a first interview Take every first interview you can

Resumes of course, are essential! Cover Letters too! They accentuate your resume in the ways you want it too. It carries your voice points out your best qualities in relation to the posting. What you need to consider while applying for jobs: Read Carefully! Pay close attention to deadlines, closure dates, and special instructions to apply Each company s process is different--not every company may respond It may take several weeks to hear back Keep a positive outlook!

Use Buzzwords that are commonly associated with your chosen area. Matching yourself to the job description helps you appear qualified for the job. It s Subjective: companies most likely are evaluating your fit to the role, company, etc. When reading quickly, recruiters will notice these

Technical Qualifications needed for the role Bloomberg, Excel, InDesign, etc. Action Verbs that are specifically referenced Design, Supervise, Lead, Coordinate, Market, Balance, Audit, Evaluate, Analyze, Consult, etc. Unique, marketable terminology that is proprietary to the organization Companies typically use certain identifiers for their culture, their brand, their environment, etc.

Job searching gets repetitive, but you don t want to cut corners and potentially miss Spend time to tailor your application to each posting (resume and cover letter) Use what s given to you Postings offer all you need to show a fit Use industry, company knowledge as well Put your best foot forward (processes may not be the same for each company/position you apply for).

When is too soon to follow up? Use posted timelines as a guide Relationship with the recruiter/contact can influence when you should act If anything has changed When postings close wait 3-5 business days When commitments are extended or missed (by either applicant or recruiter)

How do I best manage it? Job Application address (completely separate) Log all applications in spreadsheet/document Create Job Agents! Make a scheduled commitment (every day from 4-5; every Saturday from 2-5) Keep a close eye on postings/opportunities Before logging onto facebook, see if there are new positions posted then go to fun as a reward

Have preliminary conversations to request their service One page document (name, title, relationship, contact info) card stock paper Give them heads-up when employers ask for them. Professional courtesy Accelerates response time

Tailoring applications takes longer to apply, but saves time in the end. Stay Positive 1 every in 30 applications gets an interview Direct correlation between time spent tailoring to better ratio of success Marathon not a sprint Start early Get help when you need it!
