2 LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT INFORMATION 6a. Module Description People represent a key source of sustainable competitive advantage for most organisations in the 21st century. Those organisations that can assemble together teams of people with the necessary skills, attitudes and experience to meet their objectives are likely to survive and be more competitive in the long run. This module therefore takes a strategic approach to resourcing and talent management to ensure that organisations remain competitive. Students will be encouraged to analyse key employment markets, both nationally and internationally, as part of the planning process to meet current and future needs. The module also focuses on the practical aspects and increasing sophistication of recruitment and selection and the role of employer branding in attracting and retaining talent. Other channels of accessing skills outside hiring will be examined such as the employment of agency workers, subcontractors and consultants, or through outsourcing arrangements. Effective organisations not only develop a strategic approach to attracting staff, but also to retaining staff and managing their performance, including absence management. Retention strategies will be evaluated including the induction and socialisation process which is a key element in retaining staff in the early months of their employment and developing a positive psychological contract. Finally, students will evaluate how to manage the release of employees, whether voluntary or otherwise, efficiently, ethically and lawfully. Throughout the module students will be required to reflect critically on theory and practice and to take into consideration both legal and ethical issues. One of the main focuses for the design of this module has been the further development of relevant employability and professional skills. Such skills are implicit in the learning outcomes. This module will be assessed by 2,200 word report and a group presentation. For students registered on the PG Dip Human Resource Management or MA Human Resource Management, successful completion of this module provides exemption against the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) unit 7RTM Resourcing & Talent Management. 6b.
