1 Scene Module 4 - Part 1 Script (Note Script that appears is red is text that appears at some point on the scene) Students Information for Mentors and Mentees The Nevada legislation provided the following guidelines for potential mentors to participate in the Nevada Promise Scholarship program. The purpose of this training module is to familiarize you with the mentor role. You are about to begin Module #4 Part 1. Why mentoring? 1 P a g e

2 Mentoring has been proven to help students succeed and to positively impact our community. By dedicating a few hours of talent and time, mentors guide students through their transition from high school to college. This is especially important for students who are first in their families to attend college, known as first-generation college students. 2 P a g e

3 The Nevada Promise Scholarship Program requires its new applicants and recipients to fulfill several requirements before becoming eligible to receive the scholarship. One crucial requirement is the mentor component which combines the efforts of mentors, staff and faculty to ensure new applicants and recipients achieve their personal and educational goals while at CSN and beyond. In order to remain eligible, Nevada Promise Scholarship new applicants and recipients must meet the mentoring requirement on or before April 30 (2019) (Nevada Promise New Applicants) Nevada Promise New applicants must participate 3 P a g e

4 in one guided mentor activity no later than April 30 (2019) of their senior year of high school. Mentors and new applicants will be advised of the mentor activity schedule as it becomes available. Opportunities to meet this requirement will be made available at each CSN campus and some participating CCSD high schools. 4 P a g e

5 (Nevada Promise Recipients) Nevada Promise Recipients are required to meet with a mentor at least two times per academic year on or before April 30 (2019). Recipients and mentors will be matched and can communicate using our online mentoring platform. Please visit csn.edu/promise-mentor for more information. CSN has a number of programs available to meet student needs and vary the level of mentor involvement. You will find more information later in this module. We are actively recruiting mentors in our community. Help us spread the word! The Nevada Promise bill requires that: 5 P a g e

6 Mentors be at least 21 years of age Mentors cannot be compensated for their mentoring services Applicants must pass a criminal background check before serving as a mentor. CSN will cover the cost of the criminal background check. A mentor may not be assigned a mentee they employ or who is closely related to them (within the third degree) Community members interested in becoming mentors must follow the next steps: Visit ( the Nevada Promise Mentor site and complete an application The law, which created the Nevada Promise Program, requires all mentors to undergo a criminal background check. The cost for the criminal background check will be covered by CSN. The mentor must participate in a mandatory orientation and training in the fall (2018). 6 P a g e

7 By successfully completing this training, you will meet this requirement. The Nevada Promise mentor component utilizes a systematic three-tiered approach that varies the level of commitment, maximizing the mentor mentee relationship to best meet the needs of students and mentors. The following mentoring options are available: Tier I Nevada Promise New Applicants Introduces mentees to the benefits of mentoring by connecting students to resources and other tiered mentoring programs. Provides opportunities to complete a program requirement, and allows for an initial assessment of the student s needs. Tier II Nevada Promise Participant 7 P a g e

8 Introduces or develops a mentees understanding of the benefits of mentoring by linking mentoring to measurable academic objectives, and maximizes the students professional and academic areas of interest. This promotes an ongoing opportunity to access resources and engage in peer-to-peer and mentormentee interactions. Tier III BUMP Up Nevada Promise recipients may also be BUMP Up participants.
