ABOUT US Practical Action uses technology to challenge poverty in developing countries. Through technology Practical Action enables poor communities to build on their skills and knowledge to produce sustainable and practical solutions that can transform lives. Working throughout 13 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, Practical Action improves the lives of around one million people every year. Programmes are focused around four key areas where people living in poverty can access and use technology to transform their lives:- These are: Energy Access Sustainable access to modern energy services for all by Food and Agriculture A transition to sustainable systems of agriculture and natural resource management that provide food security and livelihoods for the rural poor. Urban waste and water Improved access to drinking water, sanitation and waste services for the urban poor Disaster risk reduction Reduced risk of disasters for marginalised groups and communities THE ROLE The Head of Major Partnerships post will be based in our UK office near Rugby, with flexible working arrangements available. It is a full-time position working 35 hours per week. The salary for this role is 44, per annum depending on experience.

3 JOB PROFILE Job Title: Area: Reporting to: Grade of Post: Head of Major Partnerships Fundraising, Marketing & Communications Head of Public Fundraising & Supporter Services A SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF ROLE Practical Action is ambitious for its work and for its fundraising. To deliver this we need strong fundraising leadership and fundraisers who are passionate about fundraising. Your role will be to deliver strategic direction, operational plans and the effective leadership and management of the charity s high value fundraising team, with specific responsibility for the Trusts & Foundations, High net worth individuals (HNWI s) and Corporate teams. Working closely with, and reporting directly to the Head of Public Fundraising, you will play a key role the development and implementation of the Public fundraising strategy. As part of a successful team you will play a significant role in the growth and development of our fundraising income in this area, delivering annual income targets and ensuring we maximise all potential income sources. You will work with the team to develop key supporter relationships, deliver the highest quality proposals and reports and to manage the pipeline of prospects. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership and Management Lead and manage the Major Partnerships team consisting of Trusts & Foundations, HWNI s and Corporates, ensuring there is synergy across all three areas in terms of philosophy, systems and style to ensure fundraising income and objectives are met. Lead, motivate, develop, coach and ensure training is in place for all team members to enable them to deliver effectively in their roles. Be open to all opportunities for maximising fundraising income, able to adapt and act with entrepreneurial drive to make opportunities a reality even when timescales are short and resources are limited. This includes where appropriate responding to emergency situations in Practical Action s countries of operation. Ensure implementation and evaluation the work within the team. Strategy development and delivery Lead the development, creation and implementation of a coherent and compelling Major Partnerships fundraising strategy & annual plans to grow our income with a focus on growth. Monitor the performance of the Major Partnerships fundraising plan, adjust & reforecast budgets to reflect performance; minimising risk and exploiting opportunities. Identify new, innovative and emerging opportunities to grow income and improve net contribution and prepare robust business cases for investment in such opportunities. Work with the team to develop high quality proposals and reports to maximise income. Develop and manage income and expenditure budgets to deliver to agreed objectives. Contribute to the planning, delivery and evaluation of the overall fundraising strategy.

4 Fundraising planning, reporting and performance management Work as part of a management team within the Public Fundraising Unit, to lead, prepare and develop strategic fundraising plans (income and expenditure) taking specific responsibility for Major Partnerships in line with the Public Fundraising strategy; Deliver the fundraising plans (income and expenditure) and grow Practical Action s income in line with our strategy. Lead the Major Partnerships team to identify and secure new sources of funding and together with the team and Relationship Manager, build relationships with key high value donors and prospective supporters. Lead on the development and on-going management of the annual income and expenditure budget, overseeing the performance of Trusts & Foundations, HNWI s and Corporate campaigns reviewing expenditure, income and trends and reporting actively to the Head of Fundraising and the Fundraising and Communications Director at monthly income meetings. Ensure Major Partnerships fundraising online presence and interaction is integrated into the wider organisational digital strategy. Manage the review, re-forecast and re-phase of income at key strategic periods. Adapt plans & reforecast budgets to reflect actual performance, opportunities & threats. Work with the Insight Manager to monitor and understand the performance metrics of the Major Partnerships team. Track performance against targets and objectives and provide timely management information and insight. Working together with colleagues, take a proactive and hands-on approach to the implementation and delivery of major fundraising projects, including DFID Aid Match. Relationship management Leading the Major Partnerships team, and working together with the Relationship Manager, maintain and further build strong long term relationships with key higher value supporters to maximise income and deliver growth in our income. Develop and ensure implementation of a comprehensive funding pipeline and ensure ongoing horizon scanning of new funding opportunities to continually build the pipeline Work with the Insight Manager to analyse results and develop and build a suite of reports that allow us to track and monitor our work in this area. Work with team to deliver a well-defined supporter stewardship process to ensure high quality relationship management to key supporters to deepen commitment to Practical Action s work. Other responsibilities Undertake other tasks reasonably requested by the Head of Public Fundraising and Supporter Services and deputise in their absence if required. Input into the planning of the wider strategic remit of the Public Fundraising team. Help build a culture of fundraising across the organisation and act as an ambassador between fundraising and other departments and ensure that relationships are built and remain productive. Maintain an awareness of commercial and sector trends and legislation that relate to Practical Action and its ability to grow its high value fundraising. Ensure that Practical Action follows and champion best practice relating to fundraising standards and our approach to supporter care. Share and promote best practice, priorities and outcomes internally and externally.

5 OTHER REQUIREMENTS: This post may be required to work unsocial hours, away from the office, or overnight when necessary. The post will also require some international travel. 6 PERSON SPECIFICATION SKILLS & EXPERIENCE COMMUNICA TING WITH OTHERS PERSONAL QUALITIES TEAM WORKING Degree level or relevant qualification or comparable experience in marketing or fundraising Post graduate or training in fundraising, sales, marketing and management A proven track record of at least eight years in successfully securing six figure income from at least two of the following disciplines:- High net worth individuals, Trusts & Foundations and Corporates At least five years successful experience of managing and leading staff, preferably in a fundraising environment. A strategic thinker with proven experience of developing and writing fundraising strategies and plans to deliver great fundraising returns. Energetic, with a drive to be successful and inspire others. Confident proposal writer & able to evaluate and proof engaging proposals and reports. Be supporter focused and enjoy a hands-on collaborative environment Excellent project and time management skills with the ability to plan, manage and evaluate multiple fundraising projects. Superb attention to detail, used to delivering systematic approaches, be analytically driven, to ensure clear pipeline and donor research management processes and in place Ability to assimilate and analyse financial information with experience of managing and monitoring budgets, setting and meeting targets and KPI s. IT literate, able to use Microsoft Office and CRM databases, preferably Raiser s Edge Demonstrable ability to articulate a vision, inspire leadership, empower and motivate a team with energy, enthusiasm and flair to create a high performing, innovative, results oriented and ambitious culture. Possess highly developed verbal and written communication skills, able to influence, negotiate, build relationships and present to a range of internal and external audiences to the highest level.
