1 COURSE SYLLABUS & OUTLINE Course Title: Quarter: Instructor: Meeting Times: Location: Human Resources as a Strategic Business Partner X UCLA Extension Course 4 Units Spring 2011 Phil Ray 6:30-9:30 pm UCLA Office Hours: Course Description: Human Resources is in transition to become a strategic partner to the business it serves. This transition requires a re-definition of the role human resources plays in providing value added contributions to the organization. To be a successful business partner with management, the human resources professional needs to understand the business they support, the market they compete in, the economic environment, the organization, and management s long term plans. They must be able to translate business objectives into Human Resource strategies, plans and actions that clearly contribute to the companies bottom line. His/her HR function must be focused on the integration of business intelligence into the HR Plan. Through lecture, exercises, individual and group projects, discussion, homework and reading, this 12-meeting course provides HR practitioners with the foundational tools and information to become a Strategic Human Resource Business Partner to the companies they serve.

2 Goals & Objectives: HR learn and apply Strategic Business Partner strategies to improve contribution to their business objectives. Through improved understanding of their business environment, analysis of their customers and competitors, the student will increase their business intelligence grounded in understanding the business, HR, Strategy, Goal Setting, and Long Term Plans. Enable the HR Professional to understand the business they are in, the cost drivers, how HR can contribute to business performance, metrics to measure that performance, and strategies to build Human Resource s credibility with management as a strategic business partner Required Readings: Rethinking, Dr. John Sullivan, 2004 CCH Incorporated, Chicago, Ill ISBN , Financial, Karen Berman=Joe Knights with John Case, Harvard Business Press, 2008, ISBN-13: Recommended Readings: - The HR Scorecard. 3 Students are expected to - Read the assignments during the week in which they are assigned. - Attend each class. - Complete all activities, exercises and homework. - Complete quizzes, tests, and the final exam. - Active participation in class by asking questions, contributing to class discussion and engaging in group and/or individual exercises and/or presentations. - Engage in class activities as a professional business person. Please note that ALL COURSE GRADES ARE FINAL. Incompletes: The interim grade Incomplete may be assigned when a student's work is of passing quality, but a small portion of the course requirements is incomplete for good cause (e.g. illness or other serious problem). It is the student s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an I grade as opposed to a non-passing grade. The student is entitled to replace this grade by a passing grade and to receive unit credit provided they complete the remaining coursework satisfactorily, under the supervision of and in a time frame determined by the instructor in charge, but in no case later than the end of the next academic quarter. At that time, the Registrar will cause all remaining Incompletes to lapse to the grade "F". Note: Receiving an I does not entitle a student to retake all or any part of the course at a later date. Student Behavior involving cheating, copying other s work, and plagiarism are not tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.
