2 2 Background Children in Crisis We work with children in some of the world s most dangerous and unstable places: children who have experienced chaos and uncertainty, and sometimes violence. We focus particularly on the marginalised, the vulnerable, invisible and unheard who, given a voice and opportunity, are incredibly resilient and brimming with potential. We work with the children s families and communities who help us to build, maintain and sustain the changes for children. We currently work in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Burundi and Afghanistan. Our decision to work in conflict zones or places recovering from conflict reflects our values and our assessment of where we believe we can make the most difference. We aim to reach children who are far removed from government services or other organisations. In such environments the key is to build on existing community knowledge and strengthen self-reliance: helping people solve their own problems while giving them a hand up when solutions are beyond them (such as training teachers), and linking them to future sources of help. We focus on education and child protection because in improving children s life chances we can stop poverty being passed from parents to children. We aim to support lasting change: through adult literacy, education and income generation we support families and communities to sustain their children s education, and access resources from government. We believe that capable local organisations are an indispensable part of long-term change, so we always work through local partnerships, building local capacity in the process. Children in Crisis was established by Sarah, Duchess of York in 1993, and her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are Children in Crisis Ambassadors. The Chairman of Children in Crisis Trustees is Dr. Anthony Wallersteiner. Our annual income is around 3.0 million. The Director of Fundraising and Communication will be joining Children in Crisis in a pivotal year. Levels of energy and passion are high amongst our founders, Trustees and influential supporters. In 2014 we had a very successful 21 st Anniversary Event which not only generated significant income, but introduced us to a new network of influential and HNW individuals. The post-holder will take a lead in building up our Major Donor programme, particularly in the USA, the Middle East and in the UK. The programme is already underway and showing great potential. The post provides an exceptional opportunity for the right individual to deliver a successful fundraising and marketing programme and generate an impressive network of corporate, media, institutional and high net worth individuals as well as delivering on fundraising targets.
