1 Recruitment Information Pack Fundraising Director

2 INTRODUCTION FROM THE DIRECTOR OF FUNDRAISING, EXTERNAL AFFAIRS & STRATEGY Thanks so much for taking the time to consider this exciting opportunity to become Fundraising Director here at Ambitious about Autism (we shorten the name to Ambitious ). I joined Ambitious in November 2015 and, five months in, everything that excited me enough to join the charity, has been confirmed. I hope the opportunity to join Ambitious in this crucial role will excite you too and that Ambitious might be the right place to invest your creativity, passion, leadership and drive. The challenge that children and young people with autism face is simply trying to live in the way we all do making the ordinary possible is how we describe it. The challenge is as fundamental as wanting an education that isn t disrupted by exclusions running at a staggering 40% - or finding a place in further education when we know that 75% of young people with autism can t find a college place. This all culminates in 85% of people with autism unable to get what they most want: a job. Behind those shocking facts are the people we are working with and whose life chances we are committed to changing for the better. Our own learners, their parents and our Youth Council don t hold back about how the challenges they face actually feel to them, referring to: bullying at school; isolation and loneliness; a frustration and anger about not being able to develop and use their undoubted talents and the reality of constant rejection as they try to get a place in college or their first job. There is, then, a lot at stake and we want you to seriously think about joining us to help us realise our ambition to make sure that the time children and young people with autism spend at school, college and in preparation for adulthood and work is as good as it can be and will give them the fighting chance they need to live the life they want to live. We are a young organisation having opened our flagship school in Our school and college places are largely funded through fees (to the tune of 9m) but to 2

3 innovate, create new services and deliver high impact campaigns we depend on voluntary income which currently runs at c. 2.5m a year on a spend of c. 700k. Our voluntary income broadly splits 30% corporate partnerships and related events (involving companies like Talk Talk and Rapha for example) and 70% major donors, trusts & foundations. We have other, smaller, income streams that need to be developed and these include community, legacy and individual giving. In terms of our plans for the next stage in the development of Ambitious and the role we d like you to play, here s how it looks. Firstly, the team. Success and job satisfaction depends on mission (of course) but also the people we recruit and work with. The fundraising team breaks into three teams led by experienced Heads of Function: - Trusts, Lottery and Statutory fundraising led by Claire who joined us from the Red Cross. - Major Donor Fundraising led by Jessica who joined us from Combat Stress. - Events and Community Fundraising led by Jay who joined us from Save the Children. This role and the fundraising team are part of a wider Fundraising & External Affairs department. The department includes a Policy & Campaigns team led by Ed who recently joined us from the special educational needs organisation SENDirect. We also have a Digital, Media & Marketing team led by Charlotte who joined us from the Children s Commissioner for England. It s important to understand that you will be expected to engage directly with the Board of Trustees, Patrons, Youth Council and the Executive Leadership Team (which includes me). This is a truly senior role and you and I will be working in partnership to ensure these key stakeholders support and are comfortable with our fundraising strategy. In addition, the work of the department comes together in integrated teams to deliver campaigns that drive mission, income, profile and organisational effectiveness. If you are hungry for a joined up approach and a chance to make a direct impact across the whole of an organisational strategy, you ll get it here at Ambitious. In terms of our fundraising ambition and what we d expect our new Fundraising Director to deliver in the coming years, will be to lead a step change in our fundraising through: - The completion of our fundraising work to deliver Ambitious College. We are about to go from the private phase (which has raised about two thirds of the target) to a public phase to deliver the final c. 1.2m by September

4 - Post 2018 the fee income sustains the college for future generations of young people seeking further education and preparation for adulthood. - Personally delivering major gifts and guiding and supporting colleagues to do likewise from high value individuals and business partners all the while ensuring we maintain best in class supporter engagement and development strategies. - Your personal engagement in the development of fundraising propositions to support ground breaking projects related to: Employ Autism; Youth Participation, Parents & Carers Support & Participation; our Schools and related campaigns and Accessible Technology. - Directly contributing to an increase in our national profile through personally securing corporate partners to back our campaigns, working with our Comms team to make best use of the partners marketing muscle and customer and employee reach to mobilise tens of thousands of people to take action which will, of course, including giving donations - Driving the charity s efforts to build a strong pipeline of prospects to fund the future growth of the organisation including a focus on building currently underdeveloped income streams that include legacies, individual giving and community fundraising - Co-creating major national campaigns which, in 2016, will focus on changing the face of education and employment opportunities for children and young people with autism. On the more practical points about this role, we are based in leafy North London just down the road from Highgate Tube or a bus from Finsbury Park. It looks a bit out of the way but is just a standard commute and travelling out of the centre means you get a seat! If this looks to you like a role worth pursuing, please get in touch and let s find an early opportunity to speak so that we can move this along. Thanks and best wishes, John Trampleasure Director of Fundraising, External Affairs & Strategy 4
