4 ISSUES FACING EMPLOYERS IN THE SECTOR An ageing workforce and skills shortage within the Built Environment sector Lack of diversity 21% identified finding suitably skilled staff as their key business challenge. Industry needs 120,000 new apprentices over the next five years with the Apprenticeship Levy impacting all major employers Retention on many programmes is poor, especially among apprenticeships. *CITB Employer Survey 2014 and 2015 *Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

5 ISSUES FACING YOUNG PEOPLE 46% of young people agreed that the construction industry is important for the UK economy yet the majority haven t searched for a job in this sector, favouring retail (45%), hospitality, travel and/ or leisure (22%) and education sectors (18%). 45% agreed that jobs in the sector are mainly targeted towards men. Almost one in five (19%) said the construction sector is not a desirable industry to work in 26% said jobs in the industry are not secure. *YouGov Omnibus

12 GET INTO PROGRAMME Is a sector specific employability programme developed with employers for work-ready young people to support them into jobs. 19 SOCIAL VALUE ACHIEVEMENTS Balfour Beatty are one of our leading partners - we have worked on 11 different tenders such as High Speed 2, Highways England and three city councils. We are also working with two Train Operating Companies (TOCs) and are delivering 10 employability programmes a year across four rail franchises. These partnerships were all established during the tendering process, when we matched our provision with the Department for Transport s social value requirements.
