What will engineering achieve in the 21 st century? What is a vision for what engineering needs to achieve in the 21 st century? 5

Vision Goals Objectives 6

Vision : Continuation of life on the planet, making our world more sustainable, safe, healthy and joyful. 7

Vision : Continuation of life on the planet, making our world more sustainable, safe, healthy and joyful. Goals: Grand Challenges for Engineering Meeting the 14 Grand Challenge goals delivers the vision 8

Key Features: Global Vision & Goals Four measures of life on the planet Not Centralized (movement not a project) Opportunity for everyone People-Centric, not Thing-Centric 9

1. Make solar energy economical 2. Provide energy from fusion 3. Develop carbon sequestration methods 4. Manage the nitrogen cycle 5. Provide access to clean water 6. Restore and improve urban infrastructure 7. Advance health informatics 8. Engineer better medicines 9. Reverse-engineer the brain 10. Prevent nuclear terror 11. Secure cyberspace 12. Enhance virtual reality 13. Advance personalized learning 14. Engineer the tools of scientific discovery 10

Vision: Continuation of life on the planet, making our world more sustainable, safe, healthy and joyful Goals: 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering Objectives: Deliver Solutions for each Goal 11

Approach to the Objectives: Initiative Group: creates solutions - direct (local solutions to global problems) Talent Group: creates the workforce - indirect (prepare youth to solve the problems) 12

Vision: Continuation of life on the planet, making our world more sustainable, safe, healthy and joyful Goals: 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering Grand Challenges Scholars Program: Prepare talent to solve the Grand Challenges: The Talent Group 13

Program requires student competency in five areas not normally found in engineering curriculums. Each university determines how, and whether its students achieve these competencies. 5 competencies of GCSP program: Talent Competency: Research/creative project experience on GC like topic Multidisciplinary Competency: understanding through direct experience Viable Business/entrepreneurship Competency: viable business models Multicultural Competency: understand through global experience Social consciousness Competency through service learning 14

In 2015, 120+ Deans of Engineering (~ 1/3 U.S. deans) committed to graduating more than 20,000 Grand Challenge Scholars over the next decade. Today: 62 GCSP Programs approved (53 US, 8 int l) 11 GCSP Programs under review (10 US, 2 int l) 87 Programs exploring (61 US, 26 int l) 15

Vision: Continuation of life on the planet, making our world more sustainable, safe, healthy and joyful Goals: 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering Grand Challenges Summits: A forum to discuss solutions to the Grand Challenges: The Initiative Group 16

Washington DC, 2017 Beijing, 2015 London, 2013 Sponsors Summits Support the Initiative Group Approach to Meeting the Grand Challenges Objectives 17

The Grand Challenges are: Mega-engineering problems. Public Understanding of Engineering because it answers: What is Engineering? How does Engineering serve people and society? 18

Grand Challenges: Local Solutions to Global Problems Other national academies and organizations Grand Challenges Scholars Program Students are inspired by the Grand Challenges Over 50% GCSP students (US) are females and minorities 19
