MEET THE UW > The UW is a tri-campus system Seattle, Tacoma, Bothell > The Seattle campus is the largest 46,000+ students (undergrad & grad) > Fall 2017 freshman class of nearly 7,500! 61% of students are from WA Popular undergraduate majors include: > Computer Science, Psychology, Business, and Biochemistry

THE BEGINNINGS OF THE EMPLOYER EDUCATION SERIES

WHAT IS IT? > A series of offerings to educate employers on a variety of recruitment-focused topics. > Our first offering was Recruiting 101, aimed at orienting employers to our campus & resources.

WHY DID WE START IT? > Originally inspired by colleagues doing similar work > The value was immediately clear to us because: Employers need support Students need jobs and internships We need to stretch ourselves as career services professionals > And, let s be honest..this can get old:

THE HUSKY IN THE ROOM > We re the largest institution in a major metro area > Many of our core programs are ranked nationally > The Seattle economy is booming

DECIDING WHO TO INVOLVE > Our goal was streamlining an employer s experience on campus. > We leveraged existing relationships that also covered frequently sought-after programs and skillsets on campus. PRO TIP Be clear about collaborative roles and responsibilities early; what s done by committee and what tasks are assigned to specific individuals?

TOPICS AND FORMAT

PICKING AND DEVELOPING CONTENT > We started small - content we knew inside & out, for our Recruiting 101 session. > We picked topics broadly applicable across college & discipline lines, and focused on UW. PRO TIP What knowledge have you shared so often that you ve started to take it for granted? Take it out of your brain and put it on the page. Start there.

THE QUESTION OF FORMAT TRUE or FALSE: The value was in the shared in-person experience.

BUT WE RAN INTO COMPLICATIONS > Hosting in-person events at UW isn t cheap! > Originally we charged employers to cover costs

MOVING TO VIRTUAL.AND FREE! > UW contracted with Zoom, so we decided to try it > We now offer almost all workshops through Zoom: Less time intensive for us to host Increased registration Geographic diversity of employers Can offer free of charge to employers PRO TIP Look for a platform that includes live-streaming and recording functionality, chat and Q&A options, the ability to poll participants on the fly, and the functionality to generate reports on those who attended/logged in.

IS THE SERIES EFFECTIVE?

SUBJECTIVE IMPRESSIONS > Saves our time (and sanity!) Fewer 1:1 repetitive employer consultations > Enhances employers experience at our institution Helps them more effectively navigate our large campus > Creates more & better opportunities for students At least we hope so

FOLLOW-UP SURVEYS Response rates: 4% to 26% Feedback: Improving over time Our survey data has: Helped us improve our programs Resulted in offering new webinars Led to creation of new handouts/videos Takeaways: Gradually more on-target

FOLLOW-UP SURVEYS > The Recruiting 101 event was a good use of my time and my organization s resources April 2016 Strongly Agree 2 25% Agree % Neutral % Disagree 0 0% Strongly Disagree 0 0% August 2016 Strongly Agree 4 67% Agree 2 33% Neutral 0 0% Disagree 0 0% Strongly Disagree 0 0% Thank you for your time in putting this together, the networking and connecting with staff at the Career Center was a huge help and likely a strong partnership going forward.

FOLLOW-UP SURVEYS Program was a good use of my time. Strongly Agree 3 16% Agree 11 58% Disagree 5 26% Strongly Disagree 0 0% Ratings of certain sections: Avg. of 2.92 on 4 point scale somewhat relevant/helpful The biggest take away for me was that we absolutely will not be using the UW career center or the UW husky job board as a source for finding future candidates, as UW is clearly instilling the wrong message in our youth and future generation. To be honest, the overall impression we received from the UW career center staff was very off-putting and very farfetched from reality.

FOLLOW-UP SURVEYS I learned strategies I can use to enhance our internship program. Strongly Agree 7 50% Agree 7 50% Disagree 0 0% Strongly Disagree 0 0% Key takeaways related to: Onboarding Supporting intern learning Evaluating intern performance Encouraging intern reflection I thought this was a great webinar. It gave me a lot of ideas for new enhancements and reinforced the ideas that I was already thinking about implementing. Now, I have a clear idea about how they are going to be incorporated into my internship program and why they are important.

FOLLOW-UP SURVEYS I am more knowledgeable about the steps & tasks associated with starting a quality internship program. Strongly Agree % Agree % Disagree 0 0 Strongly Disagree 0 0 How did your participation in this webinar impact your decision about whether to start an internship program? The webinar made me MORE inclined to start an internship program % The webinar didn t change my plans % The webinar made me LESS inclined to 0 0 start an internship program The webinar was very informative and I am so glad that I was invited to join. If we do end up going forward with an internship, I definitely have a better understanding of where to start, what the expectations should be and the thoughtfulness that should be applied while developing the program. Thank you.

LONGER-TERM IMPACTS Difficult to gauge! How long to wait before assessing? Is time spent tracking employer activity worth it? How do we know their actions were related to our workshop? Their action step could be outside our center

LOOKING AHEAD

WHERE DO WE HEAD FROM HERE? > Enhance data gathering: What do we want to know about attendees? How often do we offer workshops? How much time should we spend collecting / analyzing data? > Offer on-demand content options > Leverage existing audiences during on-campus activity (e.g., career fairs, networking nights) > Offer more industry-specific content > Engage new and different employers

WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP? How will you start your Employer Education journey?

Q&A
