2 UTSPH Alumni Mentoring Program INTRODUCTION The University of Texas School of Public Health is proud to announce its Alumni Mentoring Program. The program allows current students an opportunity to connect with alumni professionals in the field of public health. GOAL/OBJECTIVE The goal is to match current students with alumna/us that can offer career guidance as well as career options to the students in the student field of interest. What are the benefits? STUDENT: The student will have an opportunity to: 1. Interact with an experienced alumna/us 2. Receive personalized feedback, career advice and guidance 3. Better understand public health as it is practiced in the community 4. Gain valuable information about the alumna/us employer and function in the organization 5. Build a professional network 6. Expand on his/her career plans 7. Develop realistic career plans 8. Learn how to balance career and personal life ALUMNI: The alumni will have an opportunity to: 1. Help UTSPH students develop their career path 2. Give back and stay connected to UTSPH 3. Help develop new talent in the field of public health 4. Share his/her expertise and experience

3 Guidelines for Becoming a Mentor The goal of the UTSPH Alumni Mentoring Program is to connect students with experienced alumni in the field of public health by allowing students to explore the profession with experienced mentors. Schedule one structured meeting with your mentee to determine goals for the mentor relationship (via Skype, , phone or in person). Discuss who will assume responsibility for arranging the meetings. Since both mentors and graduate students have busy schedules, plan future meetings each time you meet. Contact your mentee and the Mentor Program ( ) if circumstances require you to discontinue your participation or if your mentee has not maintained contact. The mentor to mentee relationship should preserve a professional relationship. Please return phone calls and correspondence in a timely fashion. 4 ALUMNA/US How to Sign- up to Become a Mentor *If you are an alumna/us and wish to sign up to be a mentor, follow these instructions: 1. Log on to Job Ops. 2. Under the Career Services section, click on the Mentor tab to navigate to the "Alumni Mentor Database." 3. If you have never registered as a mentor click on the hyperlink at the bottom of the page that reads Click Here to Register. 4. Read the instructions and fill out the profile that the mentees will see when searching for a mentor. You can even select your specialty within public health (epidemiology, behavioral health, etc.). 5. Once you have registered, you can log in at any time and view or make changes to your profile. You'll need to remember your username and password, so it's a good idea to write it down somewhere. 6. How frequently you are available to students is left to you. To protect your privacy, set "Student Contact Method" to anonymous. The student can send you an without seeing your contact information. 7. You determine your level of commitment to the mentoring relationship, which you can change at any time. 5 STUDENT How to Find a Mentor The goal of the UTSPH Alumni Mentoring Program is to connect students with experienced alumni in the field of public health, allowing them to explore the profession with experienced mentors. *If you are a student and wish to search the database for a mentor, follow these instructions: 1. Log on to Job Ops. 2. If you have never registered, click on the hyperlink at the bottom of the page that reads "Please Click Here to Register. 3. Read the instructions and fill out the profile and demographic data. 4. Once your registration has been authorized, you can log in at any time and view or make changes to your profile. You'll need to remember your username and password, so it's a good idea to write it down somewhere. 5. Once you're in Job Ops, you can search for a job, browse career related events, and search for a mentor. 6. To find a mentor in a public health field, search the database using the degree program field. This option will filter only those in public health out of the system. If you want to broaden your scope, you can do a keyword search to find others in the health care industry. 6 Students Guidelines Who are Mentors? A Mentor is an individual who volunteer to assist a current student by providing his/her insight and experience. Individuals who have registered as potential mentors have been working in the profession and are enthusiastic about providing you with guidance concerning your career. Mentors can be contacted via , phone, Skype or in person, depending on how the mentor set up his/her profile. Guidelines Mentors may be contacted for the following: Advice about general job searching or about educational requirements if you are considering a career change Information about the field that the mentor represents Referral to additional people and/or resources The mentee to mentor relationship should preserve a professional relationship. Please return phone calls and correspondence in a timely fashion.
