1 POSITION DESCRIPTION: CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER About Birth for Humankind We are a Melbourne-based non-profit organisation, established in We exist to ensure that every mother, regardless of her socioeconomic circumstances, has access to support, education and care during pregnancy, birth and early parenting. We aspire to bring a culture of celebration, inclusion, equity and kindness to birth culture and work to fill the current gaps in the Australian maternal health system. The women we support are primarily from refugee or asylum seeker backgrounds, young women, women experiencing homelessness and women with a history of family violence and trauma. We provide support to women through a number of tailored birth support and education programs, including a Doula Support Program, Education, Research and Advocacy programs. Our Vision Every mother has the care and support she needs to make empowered choices and to have the best birth and early parenting experience possible for herself, her baby and growing family. Our Mission To foster healthy families and communities by providing mother-centred support, education and holistic care throughout pregnancy, birth and after the baby comes. 2 Purpose of the role The Chief Executive Officer leads Birth for Humankind to achieve the organisation s vision. With a focus on sustainability, the CEO is accountable to the Birth for Humankind Board of Directors, and has ultimate responsibility for execution of the strategic plan, operational plans and the day-to-day running of the organisation. We are seeking an experienced, collaborative leader with expertise in fundraising and advocacy within the community services sector, and who has a passion for maternal and/or women s health outcomes. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES In strategic and operational management, the CEO will: Execute Birth for Humankind s strategic plan with a focus on sustainability of Birth for Humankind; Diversify and strengthen our funding sources through strategic partnerships and fundraising; Work with the Board and team to deliver on fundraising, communications and programs strategies and plans; Provide leadership, direction and advice in the development of program, operational and financial plans, including review and evaluation for ongoing success, and effective management of change and growth; Maintain the organisation s operational policies and procedures, and ensure corporate and regulatory compliance; Ensure that the Board is provided with timely, strategically focused reports in advance of each Board meeting; Ensure that the Board is fully informed on the functioning of Birth for Humankind, including proactively advising the Board of risks to the organisation. In financial and resource management, the CEO will: Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices and policies; Work with senior management and the Board to prepare the annual budget and prudently manage Birth for Humankind s financial resources within budget allocations; Be responsible for the development of Birth for Humankind s financial resources and fundraising targets, to ensure long-term sustainability and growth; Ensure corporate and regulatory compliance. In relations with team members and volunteers, the CEO will: Develop, model and maintain a collaborative organisational culture that aligns with the mission and values of Birth for Humankind, to attract, reward and retain skilled team members and volunteers, and that puts people at the heart of what we do; Ensure the growth of all team members within their roles through effective professional development and learning opportunities; Effectively manage and support the performance of direct reports, and growth of the team and organisation as a whole. 3 In advocacy and communications, the CEO will: Be responsible for driving Birth for Humankind s advocacy strategy and implementation, in conjunction with the Board and team; Be the key spokesperson for the organisation with all internal and external stakeholders to build the reach and reputation of the organisation; Contribute to a more equitable, respectful and mother-centred maternal health system for every mother by pursing partnerships; raising awareness of the barriers to care; and advocating for the benefits of doula support, particularly for women experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage; Pursue and build collaborative partnerships with relevant healthcare providers, community organisations, government departments and other stakeholders; Oversee Birth for Humankind s internal and external communications to ensure that the organisation s brand and reputation aligns with our mission and values. In programs, the CEO will: Oversee and ensure the effective development and implementation of Birth for Humankind s programs including Doula Support, Education, Research and Advocacy, and any future programs; Ensure that Birth for Humankind s programs align with the strategic plan, vision, mission and values of the organisation; Ensure that our programs and the communities we support are recognised and supported by all team members, volunteers and Directors, as the heart of our vision and work. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS In line with Birth for Humankind s strategic plan: Creation and implementation of viable development strategies and operational plans. Effective program development and delivery with clear measurable growth. Achievement of budgeted financial, donor and fundraising goals. Increase Birth for Humankind s strategic partnerships and network. Effective advocacy and lobbying at all levels. In line with best practice leadership and management: Successful human resource management and team development. Successful asset management (as applicable). Effective and efficient management of organisation administration. Effective management of legal and governance compliance, including reporting as required. Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, ensuring timely reporting on key issues and provision of strategic advice. Effective and harmonious communications and relationships with Directors, staff, volunteers and other stakeholders. Page 3 of 5

4 WHO WE RE LOOKING FOR You re a CEO or senior executive with a history of effective leadership and governance, from within a community services or health organisation, preferably with established networks within the Victorian maternal health sector. You re entrepreneurial, enjoy a challenge, and have a track record of delivering outcomes, including diverse income streams, strong collaborative teams, and a network of engaged stakeholders. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Skills and experience A proven track record in leading and developing an NFP organisation, including change management and building positive work cultures (experience working with a volunteer base desirable); Proven track record leading fundraising and business development for an organisation, including driving: grants, partnerships including government, and diversification of funding streams; Good knowledge and understanding of the role of doula, maternal and/or women s health and maternal health system within Australia, and a desire to advocate for better health outcomes for women experiencing disadvantage at both an individual and population-based level; Good knowledge and understanding of working with diverse communities; Excellent presentation, communication and advocacy skills; Proven track record in growing services, teams and a diverse funding base; Proven track record in engaging and building diverse stakeholder relationships (strong existing networks in the health and community service sector desirable); Qualifications in a relevant higher degree, including qualifications and/or experience in business development and/or fundraising. Qualities and attributes Ability to demonstrate and provide team leadership for the following essential qualities and attributes: Passion for, and commitment to, our vision and mission; Strong sense of accountability and responsibility for achieving role s KPIs and Birth for Humankind s strategic and operational plans; Ability to manage competing demands and identify priorities with limited timeframes and resources; Collaborative, inclusive and supportive leadership and management style; Commitment to transparent, open, authentic communication; Comfortable working in an informal, flexible workplace; Experience reporting to, and working with, a hands-on Board.
