1 UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO SCHOOL OF CONTINUING STUDIES Learn more. Strategic Leadership Advanced Certificate (formerly Strategic Leadership Certificate) For leaders wanting to refine their strategic skills, the Strategic Leadership Advanced Certificate enhances leadership ability by addressing purpose, process and passion. These three forces, the three Ps, are at the heart of what strategic leaders do. When brought together, they propel leadership forward and bring clarity to what every successful leader knows: where their organization is headed, how it will get there, and who is going to make it happen. Recognized by the Project Management Institute (PMI) for PMP professional development units and the Strategic Leadership Forum (SLF), this five-course advanced certificate will develop the strategic skills you need to lead with confidence and success and help differentiate you in the marketplace. Specifically, the program will teach you how: you can be more effective as a leader and manager armed with greater self-awareness and a personal leadership development plan to increase your personal impact so results will resonate to determine where you want to take your business unit, organization or idea to build the excitement, commitment, and passion of your people to build an organization with vision and purpose Advanced Certificate Requirements: Students in the Strategic Leadership Advanced Certificate must successfully complete five courses to meet the certificate requirements. 2 Required Courses Creating Compelling Business Cases Most of us have had great ideas that we could not convince others to support. The idea died and was never implemented. What you probably needed was a compelling business case to move the idea forward. Some ideas are easy to sell: you have done something similar before, you have a good track record and some credibility, your boss likes the idea already. But if you do not have sufficient credibility, or the idea is really new, or your boss sees things differently, you must create a powerful, persuasive business case. This course shows you how to create a powerful, persuasive presentation that will help you win senior management approval and support to lead your ideas forward. Determine the underlying need and its impact on the organization and its customers Link your ideas to the organization's strategic direction and needed operational and cultural shifts Create the "burning platform" (where you see significant gaps from targets within your organization's balanced scorecard) and get management commitment for change Determine stakeholder objectives (results or deliverables plus resource constraints) for the decision Consider the triple bottom line and its impact on decision parameters Generate attractive alternatives to demonstrate your research Compare the benefits, costs and risks of each alternative considered Show your financial projections (project costs versus cash flows) and their sensitivity to changes in your assumptions Consider financial ratios such as payback, return on investment and/or net present value and their impact on decision making Prepare and present your business case to other participants to gain meaningful feedback in a safe environment SCS Wed, 6 pm to 9 pm, March 21 to April 25, Instructor: Larry Chester, P.Eng., M.B.A. Emotionally Intelligent Leadership (Formerly Personal Impact: Emotionally Intelligent Leadership) Creating a rewarding and successful work-life for yourself and others takes a lot of smarts these days but the question is: what kind of smarts? Technical skills associated with your work and IQ will always be important but on their own not necessarily sufficient for today's leaders to navigate the complexities associated with today's world of work. Emotional intelligence (EI or EQ) is increasingly recognized as a defining differentiator of a leader's potential to motivate, lead, and inspire people (self and others) towards greater success and engagement. For the leader who wants to further develop their performance and leadership competencies, this course provides a framework to learn more about EI and create a customized professional development plan for you as leader, no matter where you are in your career path. Unique to this course is a personal EI assessment using the BarON EQi, the world's first scientifically proven EI assessment, and a personal coaching session with an EQi certified coach. Learn why emotional intelligence plays such a crucial role in leadership success and top team performance Develop an understanding of how emotional intelligence can differentiate leaders from good to great Develop a plan to further develop your own emotionally intelligent leadership capability Learn to apply emotional intelligence in how you understand, relate and coach others to greater success SCS Tue, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, November 8 to December 6, 2011, with final class scheduled on Tuesday, January 24, Instructor: Danny Cushing, B.A., M.B.A. Fall Session: Pre-class work includes an online assessment to be completed by Tuesday, November 1, Classes are scheduled on November 8, 15, 22, 29, December 6, and January 24.

3 Putting Leadership into Action Leadership is ultimately about behaviour behaviour that inspires, clarifies, and moves things forward. This course shows you how to combine your own strengths and style with relevant principles and practices to exercise effective leadership. With the use of case studies, insight of guest speakers, discussion of practical reference materials, and application of self-assessment tools, you learn how to harness the collective genius of the people in your organization and how to achieve recognition for yourself as an effective leader. This course replaces Critical Thinking (SCS 0036). 4 Transforming Strategy (Formerly The Leadership of Vision and Strategy) Strategy and strategic ability are easy to demand, yet hard to define and execute. In the past, they were thought to be the domain of only the most senior leaders. But the creation of a powerful direction and energy that sparks reliable, long-term growth is now everyone's responsibility regardless of level, position, or tenure. This course de-mystifies strategy and shows you how to achieve sustainable growth. Using real life situations, you evaluate existing strategies and learn approaches and techniques that work to inspire others. You then apply this theory, learning to translate your personal purpose and vision into practical strategic projects and programs that will engage others and generate winning results Skill in assessing the dynamics of your current industry or function and determining new strategic possibilities and choices that will accelerate immediate growth Understanding of the core purpose and related intentions that underpin great strategy Ability to create clear, well-articulated strategy that inspires participation, engagement, and action Proficiency in developing roll-out plans that create energy and generate success momentum SCS Mon 6 pm to 9 pm, September 19 to October 24, 2011, plus one Saturday class, 9 am to 3 pm, November 5, Meetings (20 hours)..$1,629 Instructor: Wayne Stark, M.B.A.
