1 JOB SCRIPTION Job Title: mployer: Reports to: irect reports: Term: Collections Care and Conservation Officer, epartment of Collections Management Trustees of the Royal Air Force Museum ( the Museum ) Head of Collections Management (HoCM) None Full-time, 23 month fixed-term contract Purpose of the Job To develop and deliver collections care, preventative and interventive conservation activities as part of the epartment of Collections Management (CM). Accountabilities To ensure CM activities are developed and delivered to enable the Museum to continually improve public accessibility to its collections whilst ensuring that professional standards, Accreditation commitments and Museum business objectives are met on time and within budget. To monitor collections, exhibition and storage environments. To assess state of preservation and communicate preservation risk. To arrange and conduct housekeeping activities, preventive and interventive conservation. To support the development and delivery of high quality exhibitions. To support and facilitate the Museum s commercial activities. Job Functions: Collections Care and Conservation Apply Collections Care and Conservation policies, processes, procedures and professional standards. Provide advice and guidance on all aspects concerning the care and conservation of collections, recommending appropriate storage and display conditions and advising staff on the packing, handling and movement of Museum objects where appropriate. Plan, arrange and supervise the collation and recording of environmental, pest and other Collection monitoring data. Plan, arrange and supervise the Museum s Conservation Cleaning programme to ensure objects on display and in storage are regularly inspected, assessed and, where necessary, treated in accordance with established procedures. 1

2 Supervise a team of two Collections Assistants, volunteers and other Museum staff in order to achieve effective performance of Collections Care and Conservation activities, processes, procedures and standards. Liaise with a wide range of individuals, including lenders, borrowers, conservation consultants and Museum staff, including volunteers, public-facing departments, Buildings and ngineering Services, esign and Collections teams, to ensure the effective performance of all exhibition and storage environments. evelop, maintain and implement the Museum s Collections Care and Conservation Plan. Monitor environmental performance in line with the Museum s policies, procedures, inward and outward loan agreements, and report performance on a quarterly basis. Analyse environmental, pest and other Collection monitoring data and report recommendations for action to the appropriate heads of departments and senior management. evelop and maintain nvironmental Monitoring System (MS) and software, environmental monitors, data loggers, pest monitoring equipment and conservation cleaning materials. Plan and arrange the implementation of the preservation assessment routines in order to identify and report risks and contribute to an effective Collections Review. evelop sustainable solutions for collections care, storage, monitoring, assessment, exhibition, access and engagement. esign, implement, maintain and review Collections Care and Conservation policies and procedures in accordance with Museum policy review schedule. Support the design, implementation, maintenance and review of the Museum s mergency Plans in accordance with review schedule. esign, implement, maintain and review Collections Care and Conservation training materials. eliver Collections Care and Conservation training for Museum staff in order to raise awareness of preservation issues and maintain awareness of emergency response procedures detailed in the mergency Plan. Attend relevant training courses and liaise with other museum institutions in order to maintain up to date specialist knowledge regarding Collections Care and Conservation. Conduct other duties as and when required to foster, support and promote effective Collections Management as a means to develop the Museum. Relationships nsure CM activities are communicated effectively to all stakeholders, both internally and externally. Cultivate internal relationships that cross team boundaries and demonstrate a keenness to collaborate with all staff and volunteers in order to share the Museum s collections with the public. Build and maintain partnerships with relevant external contacts and stakeholders. Budgets and Resources Provide effective financial management, change control and reporting for the department. Reduce operational costs and maximise resources whilst maintaining standards of products and services. 2

Hours and Physical Conditions This is a full-time fixed term position for 23 months, working 40 hours per week, 5 days out of 7. Occasional weekend, Bank Holiday and evening work will be required. The post is based at the London site but work at all Museum sites (London, Cosford and Stafford) and at other venues may be required. This is a description of the job at present. 4 Selection Criteria CRITRIA STANAR / VINC Qualifications ducated to first degree level. Postgraduate qualification in care of collections, conservation, or a similar discipline. Application / Certificates Application / Certificates Work xperience At least 2 years experience of developing and delivering collections care and conservation activities. xperience of using Collections Management systems, including environmental monitoring systems and Collections Management databases. xperience of training and supervising staff (including volunteers). xperience of analysing pest and environmental monitoring data and reporting findings. xperience of managing resources within set parameters. xperience in developing and promoting museum collections. Skills and Knowledge Ability to understand and accurately implement Collections Management policies, procedures and standards. Knowledge of conservation practice and related ethical considerations. Knowledge of collection assessment, emergency planning and response procedures. Ability to handle and move a variety of Museum objects, ranging from documents to heavy machinery.
