2 THE RULE OF THUMB: The Phela Wellness counselling programme is geared for non-clinical assessment, short term therapy, psycho-education and guidance. IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER Phela counsellors do not formally assess, diagnose and treat: Long term mental health conditions Moderate to severe addictions Developmental or educational difficulties in children You are an integral interface between employees and the access they have to this wellbeing programme. Signs and symptoms to look out for in your employees that may suggest a need to refer for counselling and coaching Changes in work performance Withdrawal from interaction with others Being oversensitive or defensive Loss of interest and motivation Deterioration of appearance Increased absenteeism or lateness Diminished attention to detail Emotional outbursts, especially over minor matters Loss of ability to plan and manage their time Distractible, poor concentration and forgetfulness Low moods or mood swings Crumbling under pressure Lethargic or hyperactive behaviour Going through a major life change

3 So you have noticed that Adam checks a couple of the boxes above, what do you do? Contact a Phela case manager if you need clarity on your concerns or advice on how to approach the employee. Meet privately with the employee to discuss your concerns in a non-threatening manner, show care and respect for them and their situation. Encourage the employee to be transparent with you about their challenges. Offer the employee an opportunity to work with a Phela counsellor on their challenges. IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER Wellness counselling is reserved for employees only. Telephonic and face to face trauma counselling is open to employees and their immediate family living in their household. Phela will provide a maximum of 4 sessions per employee per incident for management referrals. Further sessions require approval from your HR. Phela will provide a maximum of 4 sessions per employee per incident for self referrals. Should an employee require long terms interventions Phela will refer them to the Medical Aid or Social Services. MANAGEMENT REFERRAL FOR COUNSELLING SERVICES Identify the problem Speak to the Phela Case Manager if you need advice 03 Discuss referral with employee and obtain consent If the manager requires feedback regarding the client they will be ed the closing report once the case is closed 09 Employee must first give consent to provide referring manager with feedback Request referral form from HR The manager will be informed when the counselling session is booked the completed form directly to the Phela Case Manager ONLY 08 Employee will see the counsellor Contact will be made with the employee within hours 06 08
