1 YOUR ROLE AS A SERVICE UNIT MANAGER Congratulations on being appointed Service Unit Manager! You are in a select position. You were chosen as Service Unit Manager because of your ability to manage people and to meet the needs of girls in your Service Unit. As Service Unit Manager, you select, appoint and direct volunteers in partnership with the Service Unit Support Specialist and your Team. It is important that you select and appoint the right person for the position. You make sure that each person on the Service Unit Team has a position description that clearly defines expectations for the year. You make sure that everyone knows what is expected of them and gets the support and recognition they deserve. You should also keep informed of day-to-day successes, failures and problems. Teamwork requires commitment on the part of each member and a willingness on the part of all to help in a crisis situation or a time of need. Setting goals together and assigning a part of the Plan of Work to each Team member helps the Team maintain their commitment and attain a sense of pride when the Plan of Work is accomplished. As a Service Unit Manager you enable Team members to carry out assignments with satisfaction. You also help them develop new skills. You will grow in your position while helping them with theirs. When you are puzzled about position expectations, when you need advice and guidance, remember that you can turn to your Service Unit Support Specialist, who is responsible for your supervision and support. To direct the work of other s effectively, it is important to recognize what they bring to the position. You will also need to assess what they want to accomplish through accepting the assignment and becoming a member of the Service Unit Team. It is the blending of these factors with the position requirements that will help you guide the Team and each member through a successful membership year. Some of the attributes needed to direct the work of others are: Acceptance of differences in people Ability to give suggestions or advice and to recommend changes constructively and objectively Knowledge about Girl Scouting and skill in interpreting both the facts and the principles Skill in organizing your work and your Team and in helping your Team stay focused on accomplishing the Service Unit and Council goals. Belief in what you are doing and an ability to convey this feeling to others. A positive attitude and the ability to see opportunity in both favorable and adverse situations A commitment to ensuring that sound health and safety principles are observed for every Girl Scout activity.
