2 WHO ARE WE? Aim: Undertake research to build a disaster resilient Australia High quality research, that will be used by our partners, having a significant impact on improving Australia s disaster resilience Research: Focussed on sudden onset natural hazards, such as bushfire, flood, cyclones, tsunami, earthquake, storm and heat wave Funding: From 1 July 2013 under Australian Government CRC Program $47M over 8 years; Total funds $130M (cash and in-kind) Partners: ~30 end user organisatons, ~ 20 universites, BoM, Geoscience Australia

3 RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Governance and Institutional Knowledge Disaster Resilient People, Infrastructure and Institutions Communication and Warnings Understanding and Enhancing Social Resilience Economics and Strategic Decisions Economics, Policy and Decision Making Emergency Management Capability Sustainable Volunteering Scenarios and Loss Analysis Bushfire and Natural Hazard Risks Flood and Coastal Management Bushfire Predictive Services Hardening Buildings and Infrastructure Severe and High Impact Weather Prescribed Burning research and utlisaton projects - Eight new projects from program: - Diversity - Catastrophic events - Mental health and wellbeing in emergency services - Mental health and wellbeing during recovery - Damage predicton for coastal management - Land use planning - Flood death preventon - Resilience issues in indigenous communites

5 GETTING RESEARCH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE : THE CHALLENGE Avoiding the valley of death the virtual chasm that separates applied research from making a difference Figure out what matters most, making sure the right people are involved Identify and analyse the possibilities, making sure the right people are involved (maybe different from first time) Convert ideas into action, making sure the right people are involved (maybe different from second time)

10 NATIONAL NATURAL HAZARDS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENDA A national natural hazards emergency management agenda, consisting of succinct, high value problem statements across a spectrum of topics supporting natural hazards disaster resilience. Broader than the CRC research program and our ability to fund necessary research, it Informs the CRC research program. Will act as a guide to Australian research sector on high value areas of national strategic importance.
