1 SENIOR CONSULTANT, SUSTAINABILITY POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Responsible To: Council Program: Senior Consultant, Sustainability Manager, Sustainabilty Sustainability Classification Level: Salaried, Level 7 Overview of Program The Sustainability Program contributes to the creation of a smart, green, liveable and creative city through leading, innovating and collaborating with our partners to take credible action and by supporting the community to make the City of Adelaide carbon neutral and an environmental leader. Key Relationships / Interactions Internal External Staff members across the Sustainability Program City of Adelaide (CoA) staff members across all Portfolios and Programs State Government agencies in particular the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources and the Environment Protection Authority Adelaide & Mt Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board Conservation and environmental peak bodies, including the Conservation Council of South Australia Educational institutions Industry peak bodies Local government sector Community

2 Primary Purpose Responsibilities As part of the Sustainability Program the Senior Consultant, Sustainability will; Provide expert advice to Council and Corporate Programs on measures to improve the CoA s performance in one or more of the following areas: urban sustainability, integrated water management, climate change adaptation, emissions reduction, energy management, environmental monitoring, biodiversity management, waste and recycling. Develop and interpret internal policies and procedures for environmental sustainability; and interpret external policies and advise other parties as required. Play a key role in the development of partnerships within other CoA Programs, government agencies, the environmental sector, business and industry to implement initiatives to meet Council s strategic environmental objectives. Implement processes and projects to deliver program initiatives. The Senior Consultant, Sustainability is responsible for; Providing expert advice on measures to progress the Council s strategic outcomes in one or more of the following environmental sustainability areas: urban sustainability, integrated water management, climate change adaptation, emissions reduction, energy management, environmental monitoring, biodiversity management, waste and recycling. Developing and contributing to development of strategy, policy, guidelines, action plans and project briefs in relevant areas of environmental sustainability and/or climate change. Delivery of specific projects, programs and research tasks to meet the outcomes of the Program. Preparing Council and Adelaide Park Lands Authority reports, briefings, and/or workshops. Undertaking research and keeping up to date on trends in policy, practice or technology in relevant areas of environmental sustainability and/or climate change. Maintaining partnerships with government and non-government stakeholders and representing CoA at external forums as directed. Providing advice and support to CoA Programs in relevant areas of environmental sustainability and/or climate change. Selection Criteria Candidates should ensure that their application clearly demonstrates their ability to meet the Criteria detailed below. Qualifications People Management Financial Skills & Acumen Technical Knowledge & Experience Project Management A tertiary qualification in Science, Environmental Management/ Economics, Sustainability, Urban Planning or related field and / or commensurate demonstrated experience in lieu of formal qualifications. Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and engage a multi-function team, manage change and operate in an environment that promotes excellence. Proven ability to successfully manage external relationships to the benefit of the organisation. Demonstrated ability to read and understand standard financial realities and reporting, including budgeting, profit & loss, cost benefit analysis and forecasting / projections. Substantial experience with environmental policy, planning and/or projects in one or more of the following areas: urban sustainability, integrated water management, climate change adaptation, emissions reduction, energy management, environmental monitoring, biodiversity management, waste and recycling. Thorough understanding of and experience in contemporary engagement techniques / processes for sustainability planning and implementation, especially within the context of local government. Thorough understanding of environmental sustainability issues relevant to Capital Cities. Proven high level of initiative and self-discipline with ability to prioritise a broad program of works and make decisions relevant to position. Ability to exercise problem solving skills and be solutions focussed. A commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous learning. A commitment to internal and external customers demonstrated through the provision of timely, reliable and expert advice on matters within area of responsibility. Demonstrated experience in preparing high quality written reports for internal communication and advice. Proven ability to build positive relationships and consult, negotiate and communicate with all levels of management and staff, government agencies, stakeholders and the community, both verbally and in writing. Ability to consider political implications and various decision paths before acting on issues. A thorough understanding of practices, procedures and outcomes required of a records management system. A high level of organisational and time management skills. An awareness of Occupational Health Safety & Welfare issues, standards and actions in the work place. / Desirable Government Experience Experience working in a government environment. Some out of hours work may be required in order to meet the requirement of the role. An unencumbered Drivers Licence may be required. A satisfactory Police Clearance may be required.
