4 Lloyd s Register: Group Safety & Business Assurance Why I m passionate about safety A long career in manufacturing, energy projects and other sectors with very different safety records As Group Director of Safety and Business Assurance I am committed to a safety culture that supports our mission to uphold the safety of life, property and the environment We have a fundamental responsibility to look after our people it is our license to operate I ve personally led the move beyond rules and regulations to hearts and minds and seen the huge improvement in performance as a result.

Safety Culture Maturity TM Model The Keil Centre, 1999 Cooperating Level 4 Continually Improving Level 5 Develop consistency and fight complacency Involving Level 3 Engage all staff to develop cooperation and commitment to improving safety Managing Level 2 Realise the importance of front line staff and develop personal responsibility Emerging Level 1 Develop management commitment

8 Lloyd s Register: Group Safety & Business Assurance What we did to reduce lost time incidents and move from level 1 to level 3 (system aspects) Appointed a Safety Director Appointed a full-time, global, team of safety professionals Created a Health and Safety strategy, supported by annual safety plans Implemented a revised Safety Management System, with specific controls for the major risks our people face Developed global safety training programmes Introduced Golden Rules Provided improved PPE Achieved global OHSAS18001 certification

9 Lloyd s Register: Group Safety & Business Assurance What we did to reduce lost time incidents and move from level 1 to level 3 (behavioural aspects) Appointed a Safety Director Built management commitment and visibility Engaged and communicated with employees on safety issues Introduced the STOP system Told people that they are not authorised to work when they feel unsafe - as opposed to the traditional you do not have to work if you feel unsafe Challenged the belief that accidents are inevitable in certain industries

Develops safety as a core value of the organisation Ensures all employees share the belief that health and safety is a critical aspect of their job Monitors performance but is confident in its processes Constantly strives to improve hazard control Works with clients and their supply chains to increase health and safety awareness and standards Actively participates on industry safety forums Challenges how industry works and constantly seeks safer alternatives Lives with active concern about the next incident
