Why a new provision? Reduce work-related ill health, 70% increase in five years Support for employers and employees 2

Work Environment Act: Take all measures Provisions: Clarifies which social and organizational factors are to be a part of the systematic work environment management The provisions strengthen the legal rights 3

Factors contributing to ill health high demands and low control insufficient support at work conflicts or victimization low rewards in relation to effort no job security in employment subjected to injustices night work long work-weeks shift work Source: Swedish Council on Health Technology (SBU) 4

Experiences from two current supervision campaigns Five out of ten workplaces do not work systematically with preventing stress Women s and men s work environment risks are not paid attention to or dealt with in an equivalent way 5

Shortcomings in organizational and social work environment Increases the risk of ill health (sleep disorders, cardiovascular disease, back problems, depression) and are costly for individuals, employers, and society Can contribute to employees taking risks that lead to accidents Increases the risk of stress reactions, which affect concentration, memory, problem-solving, and decision-making, as well as contribute negatively to the quality of operations 6

What is organizational and social work environment? Organizational work environment what terms and conditions exist for carrying out the work, and the demands placed on the employees Social work environment how we are affected by the people around us, social interaction, collaboration, and social support from managers and colleagues 7

This is so individual... There is individual variation for all health risks at a workplace. The provisions have an organizational perspective The organizational prerequisites must be mapped in order to see whether they contain a risk of ill health 8

The provisions Aim and who is affected and who is not Sections 1-3 Definitions Section 4 Relation to systematic work environment management (SAM) Section 5 Knowledge Section 6 Objectives for a good organizational and social work environment Sections 7-8 Workload Sections 9-11 Working hours Section 12 Victimization Sections 13-14

Three areas Workload Working hours Victimization 10

Prevent unhealthy workload DEMANDS RESOURCES 11

Examples of demands amount of work timeframes degree of difficulty emotional strain cognitive load clarity in work tasks 12

Resources must be adapted to the demands in the work Some examples: working methods work equipment competence staffing feedback on the work effort opportunities for control and influence social support from managers and colleagues opportunities for rest and recovery 13

Balance in practice? Clarify the content of the work together with employees! Which work tasks What results are to be achieved Specific working methods How to prioritize if there is not enough time Who they can turn to in order to receive help and support 14

Unclear work content Breeding ground for conflicts Influences the result of operations An example: Sara, Soran, and Samuel have the same job Expected work effort The work effort in practice 15 Alla vill och kan skapa en bra arbetsmiljö

Demands in work that is very psychologically stressful Meeting people who are in difficult situations Making difficult decisions that include ethical dilemmas Take measures to counteract Examples of measures: Professional guidance Information and education Help and support from managers and colleagues Procedures for handling demanding situations 16

Three areas Workload Working hours Victimization 17

Why are working hours important Recovery and sleep affected by how long one works at what time of day time off between work shifts Mental recovery just as important as physical Deficiencies in recovery and sleep affect concentration and judgement, and contain risks of mistakes and accidents Increased risk of ill health in connection with shift work 18

Counteract so working hours will not lead to ill health For example: avoid working hours that lead to risks (if possible) enhance opportunities for recovery (breaks, pauses, simple tasks) place harmful and risky operations at daytime offering medical checks restrict contacts at the free time (phone, , etc.) clockwise schedule for shift work 19 Alla vill och kan skapa en bra arbetsmiljö

Three areas Workload Working hours Victimization 20

Victimization Make it clear that victimization will not be accepted Counteract conditions in the work environment that could give rise to victimization Have procedures for how victimization is to be handled Who receives information What happens with the information What the recipient should do How those who are subjected to it can quickly get help 21

Knowledge Objectives 22 Alla vill och kan skapa en bra arbetsmiljö

Knowledge is a tool The employer must see to it that managers and supervisors have knowledge of: How to prevent and deal with unhealthy workloads How to prevent and deal with victimization The employer must ensure that there are the necessary conditions to use these skills in practice 23

Objective supplement the work environment policy Produce objectives together, aimed at promoting health and counteracting ill health Firmly established in top management and in all parts of the organization 24

How do you go about it? Organizational and social factors must be a part of systematic work environment management (The SAM provisions, AFS 2001:1) 25

Important steps in systematic work environment management 1. Investigate 2. Assess risks 3. Take steps Find out the causes Produce an action plan with concrete measures Indicate the level of the organization at which the measure is to be decided upon and implemented 4. Follow up the measures 26

Organisatorisk och social arbetsmiljö (AFS 2015:4) 27 Alla vill och kan skapa en bra arbetsmiljö
