5 . You could consider. What drives you? - making a difference, making money, serving society, working with children, being creative, being an expert? What you are good at? One to one support, planning, research, calm under pressure, being logical, putting people at ease? Where your strengths lie? Speaking to an audience, handling conflict, event planning. What you enjoy doing? Outdoor work, busy environments, pressure? Any settings that stick with you? Retail, healthcare, media, sport-related, charities What matters to you? Values: Environmental, Gender equality, Sustainability, Wellbeing, Fairtrade

6 Career Drivers What you want from a job? A Materials Rewards possession, wealth and a high standard of living B Power/Influence to do things which are seen to be valuable for their own sake. C Search for Meaning to do things which are believed to be valuable for their own sake. D Expertise a high level of accomplishment in a specialised field E Creativity to innovate and be identified with original output F Affiliation nourishing relationships with others at work A career driver is an inner force which determines what you want and need from your working life. Drivers are sources of energy and direction which become obvious as we study the shape of our working lives. 14 Career strategy 2: Planned Happenstance (Taking Action) Indecision is desirable and sensible, as it allows the opportunity for you to benefit from unplanned events. 4 core steps Clarify Ideas: Follow your curiosity and identify your interests Remove the Blocks: Wonder how can I rather than I can t because Expect the Unexpected: Be prepared for chance opportunities, such as unexpected phone calls, chance encounters, impromptu conversations and new experiences Take Action: Learn, develop skills, remain open minded and follow up on chance events

21 Myth or reality? There are no graduate schemes in the sector I want to work in so I can t get in. I can t make a difference in a corporate role. I can t work in PR I have no prior experience. I can t work in advertising as I m not creative. If I want to use my psychology I need to be a psychologist Graduates can t start their own business as no nobody would trust them. The Aldi scheme is right for me, the starting salary is really high!
