Am I Burned Out?

Root Causes of Burnout Repetitive tasks Long hours being on call Being alone for long periods of time Little or no vacation time Collections

Sound Familiar? Family/home-life conflicts Constant property upkeep Frustrating customers Doing too many tasks for one person Unattainable goals

Does It Matter? No recognition for successes Feeling that no one cares

Signs of Burnout Tired, drained, experiencing fatigue Every day tasks are overwhelming. Feeling defeated Cognitive problems You are complacent.

Seriously, This Is Serious Problems at home and work Not taking care of yourself Thinking about work after hours No longer feel fulfilled Health problems

Customer Service Suffering? Phone calls not being returned Quoting price too quickly Not caring if customer rents Not standing up to greet customers Avoiding property tours Customer satisfaction down Problems not being addressed No one at the property

Property Looks Pretty Bad Weeds Units not ready Trash on property Light bulbs burned out Air filters need changing Golf cart needs attention Restrooms dirty Retail area dusty and understocked Hallways not clean

This really doesn t affect my store s performance overall. Not raising rents Not quoting prices reflective of your inventory Daily reports not done Mistakes Delinquency numbers are higher

The Bottom Line Retail sales down Sick days being used too often Marketing efforts down Excessive fees waived Discounts Abandoned units not cleaned out Customer complaints

There Is Hope

First, Talk About It Prepare - evaluate your situation. Talk to your significant other. Talk to your friends. Talk to co-workers. Talk to other professionals. Bottom line: Anyone you respect and trust can advise you.

Second, Write It Down Make a list: What you love about what you do What you dislike Ask questions: Why do I love that? Why do I dislike this? Create solutions How? When?

Finally, Take It to the Boss Bring the problem and suggest solutions. Don t be afraid. Most employers want their employees to be successful. He/she may be completely oblivious. The boss may have great suggestions. The boss may not tell you what you want to hear.

A Word for the Boss LISTEN. Be receptive. Your employee is trusting you to help him through this. Explain your vision. Share your plan, but listen to him. Compliment strengths. Offer solutions to help. Get to know your employee. Let him know he s appreciated. Explain to him his value. Follow up.
