2 Find out more: Degree apprenticeships: what you need to know Apprenticeships are changing and you need to be informed about how the apprenticeship levy will impact your business. The government has pledged to increase the number of apprenticeships to 3 million by To support this aim, the government is helping businesses to develop and deliver degree apprenticeships in partnership with universities. Your levy If you re a UK employer with an annual payroll over 3 million you must pay the apprenticeship levy, which is 0.5 per cent of your payroll. In return, you can draw down the full amount of your levy funds to spend on apprenticeship training. It s not just about big corporations. SMEs can also get access to government funding for degree apprenticeship training, helping them to accelerate productivity and growth at a fraction of the usual cost. Degree apprenticeships at a glance Designed specifically to fill skills gaps in business and industry, degree apprentices can either be existing staff in your organisation that you want to upskill or new talent that will bring fresh ideas to the business. Apprentices spend the majority of their time in the workplace learning on the job and are required to spend 20 per cent of their time learning the theory and practical skills to help them succeed. Academic training is designed to fit around work commitments and is delivered through blended learning consisting of on-campus day or block release sessions and online virtual learning that fits around the working day. The benefits Traditionally, apprenticeships have been about developing your employees operational skills and capabilities for trade roles. Degree apprenticeships will transform your staff into skilled professionals capable of becoming future leaders within the organisation. Address skills shortages We work with you to tailor our degree apprenticeship programmes to the needs of your business. Innovation and creativity Your degree apprentices will be taught by leaders in their field, learning from the very latest research and its practical applications. They ll bring new skills and cutting edge techniques into your organisation. Improve your productivity With better trained employees, your organisation will see a rise in productivity. Skills Funding Agency research shows that 76 per cent of businesses reported an increase in productivity thanks to their apprentices. Cost effective Degree apprenticeships are paid for through your organisation s levy allowance and government funding, saving money on traditional training courses. Attract new talent We will work with you to recruit fresh talent to your organisation that will bring new ideas and add diversity to the workforce. Retain top performers It s a great opportunity to reward engaged, high-performing employees and keep them loyal to your organisation. According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research, 92 per cent of employers said that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce.

8 Find out more: Apprenticeships in action: Capgemini Capgemini is a major multinational information technology consulting corporation that delivers business, technology and digital solutions to clients all over the world. Like many other large IT companies, Capgemini has been experiencing a worsening skills shortage as experienced staff retire. They recruit around 120 graduates in software engineering each year but need more to meet the growing demand. Aston University has been working in strategic partnership with Capgemini since 2013 and delivering degree apprenticeships since The Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship was developed to address acute skills shortages in the UK IT industry. Now we have the ability to grow our own graduates, says Anouska, Capgemini s Talent Director. We know what s coming up in our business, we know what s coming up in the industry because we live it and breathe it and we can build that into making sure that everything our apprentices learn at Aston University is directly relevant and reinforced into what they re doing in their jobs. The degree apprenticeship integrates learning with a real employment context. Over four and a half years, the apprentices develop applied competence in the interpretation and application of IT, business awareness and an understanding of the theoretical and conceptual issues central to the practice of technology solutions. It begins with a seven week technical training block held on campus, delivering core computing and business skills to enable apprentices to become an effective team member in the workplace. The remainder of the programme is delivered through blended learning, essential for students who may be working on a client site, dispersed across the country or in different time zones. Aston University and Capgemini became the first to have degree apprenticeship graduates in Their apprentices are continuing to add real value to the organisation. Capgemini have now expanded their apprenticeship provision with Aston and are also offering the Chartered Manger Degree Apprenticeship to aspiring managers. Everything our apprentices learn at Aston University is directly relevant and reinforced into what they re doing in their jobs. Anouska Ramsay Talent Director at Capgemini

10 Find out more: Apprenticeships in action: Kaplan Kaplan is a leading training provider in the UK, delivering courses and apprenticeships in finance, accountancy, leadership and management. Kaplan saw the benefits that apprentices delivered for their clients and decided to do the same with their own recruitment programme. It makes sense to practice what we preach, says Hannah, the organisation s Recruitment Manager, We have eight Chartered Manager degree apprentices and they all work in different areas of the business. Degree apprentices are with the company for four and a half years, rotating through various departments, building a well-rounded and thorough picture of operations. This all fits around occasional teaching sessions on campus and digital learning outside of work hours. Our team worked with Aston to plan the programme and what this would look like, as well as what we would need to offer as an employer, says Hannah. Once this was planned, the recruitment began. The process was relatively straightforward. The recruitment process ended with two assessments days. Narrowing the candidates down was tough as the company had a number of very strong applicants. The introduction of the apprenticeship levy kick-started Kaplan s relationship with degree apprenticeships. The company is now investing heavily in this sort of professional training. We have apprentices across the business but had never taken on degree apprentices. With apprenticeships being such a large part of the Kaplan business, we see the value that they can bring and how they offer a real alternative to the traditional university route, with the same outcome and experience to go with it. It was a huge draw for us. It was a bit of a no-brainer for us to use Aston. It is close enough for our apprentices to attend easily and renowned as a fantastic business school. 12 Find out more: The three things you need to know about the apprenticeship levy Non-levy paying organisation Annual pay bill: 1,000,000 Levy calculation: 0.5% x 1,000,000 = 5,000 Minus levy allowance: 5,000 15,000 = 0 annual levy payment Levy-paying organisation Annual pay bill: 10,200,000 Levy calculation: 0.5% x 10,200,000 = 51,000 Minus levy allowance: 51,000 15,000 = 36,000 annual levy payment If your organisation has a payroll of over 3 million it will need to pay 0.5 per cent to the government. 1. What you have to pay You are required to pay the apprenticeship levy at a rate of 0.5 per cent if your annual UK payroll is over 3 million. However, the government will also provide an annual allowance so employers can draw down the full amount of their levy funds to spend on apprenticeship training. 2. How to get your money If you are a levy-paying employer, you must declare your levy through the PAYE process. You will then receive your funds every month in proportion to the number of your employees based in England. Levy funds can be managed through the dedicated online apprenticeship service and can be spent on apprenticeship training fees in England. Levy-paying organisations will also benefit from a 10 per cent monthly top-up from the government. For every 1 that enters your online account, the government will pay a further 10 per cent. Using the above example, assuming a levy-paying employer has all of their employees based in England, they will receive 3,300 a month. Any allowance not used will be carried into the following month, so you won t miss out on additional government funding. You have 24 months to spend the funds in your account, otherwise they will be returned to the government. 3. Non-levy paying organisations can get funding too The costs of training are supported by the government, covering 90 per cent of the course fees. Plus there s no NI to pay if the apprentice is under 25. Employers with fewer than 50 employees could get up to 100 per cent funding if the apprentice is under 19 or if they are 19 to 24 and have previously been in care or have a local authority Education and Health Care Plan. Additional incentive payments of 1,000 are also available for employers who take on apprentices that meet either of these criteria.
