WHY DO PEOPLE VOLUNTEER?

RECRUITMENT OPTIONS 1. What are the barriers to recruiting volunteers that need to be overcome? 2. How have you recruited volunteers in the past? Spend 5 minutes on each and write down your ideas to discuss

WORKFORCE PLANNING What ROLES do you need for your club project or event: BEFORE DURING AFTER e.g. Who will organise & promote? Who will recruit the workforce? e.g. What roles and how many are required? Are any specialist skills required? Who will lead each project area? Who will look after the workforce? e.g. Who will promote your success? Who will follow up with the volunteers to try and retain them? Who will say thank you?

RECRUITMENT Now you ve established what needs doing, you can start thinking about WHO can do what you are looking for. For example: Hosts: what sort of person is that going to be.. Marketing and Promotion: what skills does that person need to have? Team Leaders: who will be able to lead others? Pick a couple of roles and list the types of skills that person will need to have. This will help you decide HOW you re going to try to recruit them.

LOOKING OUTSIDE E.g.

TIPS FROM VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS Create the right mind-set Say Find the right role for the right person Help people feel comfort -able Really get to know people Grow your own talent Use the right approach Always Thank You!

CLASSIC MISTAKES TO AVOID Don t Persuade someone to do the wrong role for them - they will quit Expect too much time from a person or overload them with roles Use jargon or you will turn off some people Make roles too complicated Fail to offer introductions, support and training Have too many meetings Forget to give recognition Say the role is simple, while another club officer says it is hard (or vice versa!) Speak to people (or them) once and expect to get 20 volunteers Rush in over enthusiastically - it will scare people off

SOLUTIONS TO BARRIERS Choose one barrier to recruitment you are facing 1. A = Describe your challenge 2. B = Suggest two solutions 3. A = Listen, take notes, say Thank You Swap roles. Find another person and repeat with quick fire ideas.

ACTION PLANNING When / Roles What / How Who Cost ( and time) When do you want to get things done? What roles are needed? What do you need to do to recruit them? How are you going to approach this? Who is going to be key to making things happen? How much time or money do you need to dedicate to the task? What ONE key action will you take back with you to share with your club?
