1 Partners for Life with Canadian Blood Services What is Partners for Life? Partners for Life program is a nationwide program that is designed for corporate and community organizations. When your company or organization joins, everyone works together to make a set number of blood donations within a calendar year. Imagine what your organization can achieve if everyone donated blood together. These donations differ from financial ones because they directly help patients being treated for cancer, during surgery, or after serious accidents. With Partners for Life, your organization can have a direct and positive impact on those in need. Commitment 1. Select a Partners for Life Program Champion He/she will be the main contact with Canadian Blood Services and act as a leader to promote the program and encourage members of your organization to participate. 2. 6 Blood. A vital resource. We all know blood plays a critical role in our survival. But have you ever wondered how? Most of us never really think about it. Yet within every drop of blood, you ll find components that give us energy, help us fight infections and even make up part of our identity. How much blood does it take to save a life? Canadian Blood Services collects approximately 900,000 units of blood annually. This may seem like a lot of blood; however, the average patient requires 4.6 units. Different medical procedures, accidents or diseases require varying amounts of blood. For example (1 unit = 1 blood donation): Coronary artery bypass 1 to 5 units Cancer treatment up to 8 units/week Liver transplant up to 100 units Fractured hip/joint replacement 2 to 5 units Other organ transplants up to 10 units Cardiovascular surgery to 25 units Bone marrow transplant up to 2 units/day Bleeding ulcer 3 to 30 units Sickle cell up to 4 units/month Brain surgery 4 to 10 units Aplastic anemia up to 4 units/month Auto accident/gunshot wound up to 50 units Source: America s Blood Centers Hospitals use these Blood Components: Red blood cells carry oxygen to tissues and are responsible for the renewal of carbon dioxide through the lungs. Platelets provide the basis for clotting, which helps control and stop bleeding. Plasma is a yellow liquid containing many of the body s proteins, which fight infection. It also contains elements such as calcium and magnesium, which are required to control bleeding and assist clotting. It distributes nutrients to tissues and transports waste products to the lungs, liver and kidneys, where they are removed. Help us help patients by becoming a Partner for Life today!
