1 UNIT Course Intercultural workshop (from 2 nd to 6th February 2015) Theme Intercultural Management National/cultural differences: importance to expand or break into new markets Coordinator Credits 2 Number of teaching sessions 7 Teacher/student contact hours 21 hours Extra class work 5 Time spent on tests/exams/orals 3 LEARNING GOAL AND LEARNING OBJECTIVE: LG2 Collect, process and manage information effectively LG5 Be autonomous in one s work, constantly forging a solid professional and personal identity Overall objective: The main objective of this Intercultural Workshop is to build awareness of Intercultural Competency, thus enabling learners to become operational in a global environment CONTEXT In an increasingly global world, companies need to implement innovative strategies and procedures in order to deal with cross cultural obstacles. The growing necessity for effective intercultural communication can be found in various aspects of business. Intercultural understanding and competency is a MUST if a company wants to expand, set up internationally or break into new markets. ACTIONS Building on the above statements, you are to set up an Intercultural Action Plan, in order to, enable a foreign company of your choice to expand and / or set up in France. OBJECTIVES Learners will be able to 1. discover the importance of Intercultural Communication 2. use various Intercultural Concepts actively in order to set up their Intercultural action plan

2 3. work in a multi cultural team and get results 4. share information and guarantee a good communication flow whilst working on their project 5. use the English language as a communication tool to get their message across 6. make a clear & persuasive oral presentation in English 7. set up an Intercultural Strategy with their team in order to capitalize and/or expand the network of International partners thanks to the implementation of their Intercultural communication action plan PROJECT Choose a foreign company and help them either set up in France or expand their market shares in France by suggesting an Intercultural Action Plan. Thanks to your Intercultural Action Plan this foreign company should gain market shares or set up a sustainable company in France. INFORMATION Your teachers will place you in a culturally diverse team. Taking advantage of the presence of (an) International student(s), devise an Intercultural Communication action plan or strategy. Choose a Foreign company which needs to gain market shares in France or wishes to penetrate the French market. Set up an Intercultural Action Plan to help your company reach its objectives. Give advice to your chosen company s shareholders on how to improve and increase sales and/or visibility thanks to your Intercultural Action Plan. Make sure you give the right type of advice taking into account the importance of Interculture. What should this company do on an Intercultural scale that will help them? INSTRUCTIONS Teams will choose TWO from the following list to work on: 1. Set up in a company in France, taking into account the intercultural framework? 2. Make the company more visible thanks to the implementation of your Intercultural action plan 3. Capitalize and/or expand its network of international partners 4. Break into new global markets thanks to your intercultural action plan 5. Build on diversity to get better results 6. Change or improve image of existing company in order to adapt it to France 7. Adapt image to culture in order to change image or increase market shares 8. Create a targeted communication plan taking into account culture 9. Set up a subsidiary; what changes are needed to make it work (from an Intercultural aspect) Your action plan should analyse the current situation and make suggestions on what and how to implement an Interculturally Savvy Plan BONUS: If you wish you can

3 Design a commercial or poster to sell your idea(s) highlighting how this Intercultural Plan will work for your company. (Here too adapt it to the culture). ORAL PRESENTATION Your team is to make a 10 minute oral presentation in order to convince shareholders to implement your Intercultural Action Plan, the changes, you, as a team, have decided. Be specific and explain why and how it will work. Remember to put it into an Intercultural context where culture is of utmost importance to reach your goal. You MUST make good suggestions and maybe even give examples. Use various concepts you researched or that were given to you. Be convincing, give the appropriate arguments and make sure your ideas, strategies and action plan are understandable by ALL. Feel free to create a commercial or poster to promote your plan.

4 Course organization Monday morning 9:15 to 10:30 Plenary session with presentation of partners, the theme and objectives by the coordinator, including the organization of the week. 10:45 to 12 PM Talk by a foreign partner on the theme of How Culturally diverse companies fend on global markets, Guest Speaker Monday afternoon 1:30 to 4:30 Team work. Each learner chooses ONE of the following: Power and cultural diversity Power and globalization Intercultural Management Then, briefly presents his/her concept of one of the above. The coordinator for each group forms teams based on choice of topic, task, skills, expertise, sector etc. ensuring that there is at least ONE INTERNATIONAL student per team etc. Tuesday morning 9 to 12 PM Group coordinator and International Facilitator will coach team while they work on their project. Learners will do research on Interculture and the foreign company they have chosen. Tuesday afternoon 1:30 to 4:30 Group coordinator and International Facilitator will coach team while they work on their project. Learners will do research on Interculture and the foreign company they have chosen. Wednesday morning 9 to 12 PM Group coordinator and International Facilitator will coach team while they work on their project. Learners will do research on Interculture and the company they have chosen. Thursday morning

5 9 AM to 12 PM Finalization of the project: Intercultural Action Plan by team. Each team is aided by the group coordinator and the international facilitator Friday morning 9 AM to 12 PM Presentation of Projects to Group Coordinator and International Facilitator Evaluation according to grid ONE team is chosen per class Friday afternoon 1:30 to 2 PM The shortlisted teams present their projects. All teachers and facilitators present evaluate teams according to grid (except their own team), ONE team wins. 2 to 3 PM Closing address with awards and photos of the whole team METHODOLOGY/TEACHING APPROACH Work in teams Work on the theme of their choice AND intercultural communication Are coached by both a teacher from the permanent faculty at Novancia and an International Facilitator from a foreign partner institution Communicate in English Carry out research Become active learners Learn from their peer(s) Learn by discovering ASSESSMENT Learners will be evaluated by their Novancia teacher and their facilitator. They each mark the learner according to grid, the teacher and facilitator make an average of the 2 grades. NB: Grades to be handed in to Crystal Stefanatos.
