Registering with ACOEP s Mentor Program is an excellent step in laying the groundwork for a successful career in the ED. 2 INSTRUCTIONS Registration in three easy steps 1. Visit the link ementor/ and select Find a Mentor. You will then be prompted to enter professional informa on that will be helpful to your mentor. SIDEBAR TITLE CHOOSING YOUR MENTOR You will be able to search for a mentor based on geographic loca on, specialty, hospital and more! If you do not hear back from your selected mentor a er more than a week, or have any ques ons or concerns, please contact Jaclyn Ronovsky for further assistance. 2. Once you have completed your profile, you will have the op on to search mentors profiles based on special es, geographic loca on etc. 3. When you find a mentor that you feel is a good fit, find the link at the bo om of their profile that says Request Engagement. Once you send this request, the mentor will be alerted of your interest and will be in touch with you. Please do not request more than one mentor at a me!

3 GETTING STARTED Understanding your role and getting to know your mentor WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? STARTING THE CONVERSATIO Your mentor mentee rela onship is a collabora ve effort. As with any professional rela onship, it is vital to have clear expecta ons of your role at the outset. Mentees are expected to: Iden fy ini al learning goals Seek feedback and ask meaningful ques ons Take an ac ve role in your own learning Dedicate appropriate amounts of me and energy Follow through on commitments Drive the rela onship Have reasonable expecta ons of the mentor Mentees are NOT expected to: Be an expert Get things right the first me Fit all learning into one mentoring rela onship Develop a friendship with the mentor A er you are matched with a mentor, they will make first contact. The ini al dialogue is a great me to learn about your mentor and get a be er sense of who your mentor is and what they are hoping to gain from the experience. The following ques ons can facilitate a conversa on: What will make this a successful mentoring experience? What goals do you have for acquiring skills, knowledge, etc.? How do you envision the rela onship working? What characteris cs or skills do you possess that will be an asset in making the rela onship work? What are some of your professional goals? Life goals? Achieved goals? What are you looking for in a mentee? How do you envision each of us fulfilling our unique roles? What are some of your stronger skills? As a mentor, what development are you hoping to make? What is your preferred teaching style?

4 LAYING THE FOUNDATION Mentor agreements, goal setting and relationship development ESTABLISHING A MENTOR AGREEMENT Your mentor will work with you to create a Mentor Agreement which will serve as a roadmap ensuring clarity of expecta ons and help you to stay focused as a team as you move forward. Answer the following ques ons before you speak with your mentor to establish your expecta ons: 1.What are my goals? 2.How will I be accountable for my personal development Answer the following ques ons with your mentor to establish structure in your rela onship: 1.What is the best schedule for our mee ngs (day, me, frequency, etc.)? 2.What is the best mode of communica on? 3.How will we measure progress? RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT You can help your rela onship get off to a good start by sharing your goals and expecta ons, as well as by listening to your mentor's comments. Remember, a successful mentoring rela onship offers value to both par cipants. Consider discussing the following ques ons with your mentor: 1.What are your concerns as we move forward? 2.How do you foresee this rela onship working? 3.How will we address any challenges that arise? 4.What do you value in a working rela onship? GOAL SETTING Try to establish specific goals for development and ways of measuring progress, being sure to iden fy obstacles, knowledge and experience gaps, as well as steps to success. The following ques ons will help you and your clarify needs and iden fy possible goals: 1.What do I hope to achieve within the next 3 5 years? 2.What are my skills and experience bases? 3.What have I done to develop my career? 4.How does this development e into my professional ini a ves or personal growth? 5.What other areas of my learning would be impacted with this development? 6.What resources do I have that could help this development? 7. What knowledge or skill base do I most want to grow? 8.To what degree are my goals and progress quan fiable?

5 FEEDBACK Making the most out of your relationship WHY FEEDBACK MATTERS The ability to give and receive feedback is an important skill in any rela onship. When delivered well and accepted objec vely, feedback is an invaluable tool in professional development, discovering strengths, and iden fying weaknesses. Effec ve feedback from your mentor on your performance, ideas and development is vital to the quality of your rela onship and is at the core of your rela onship s success. Remember, you should give your mentor feedback as well. This shi in perspec ve can help you both to maintain con nued support and progress. CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK Before approaching your mentor with feedback, make sure you answer the following five ques ons: 1.Does your feedback have a clear purpose? 2.Define why you are giving this feedback and what you think the mentor should change. 3.Is your feedback specific and descrip ve? 4.Give examples of an incident or behavior that led you to your cri que of your mentor's performance or ideas. 5.Is your feedback relevant? Provide only the feedback that is relevant or applies directly to this mentorship situa on. Likewise, their feedback should help you iden fy means to achieve your goals. Feedback should also be delivered in a mely manner. Listen to your mentor as they give you their advice and opinions, and give them the opportunity to respond to your feedback. Be sure to recognize the posi ve as you are given your cri que.
