JOB PURPOSE: The main purpose of this role is to organise the day-to-day operation of the Fitness Centre and all sports facilities at the Warrington Campus, ensuring the safe and efficient use of these facilities. This will include supporting and supervising the Personal Training staff and promoting a high standard of customer care. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: DEPARTMENT VISION Student Support and Guidance will strive to reach every student in raising their individual educational and personal aspirations, and to excel in promoting active citizenship and social, economic and moral responsibility. (Updated July 2010) Founded in 1839 as a teacher training college and created a University in 2005, Chester is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the UK. Growth has been fast in recent years and there are now over 10,500 students based across three campuses and several hospital sites. In 1994, recognising the changes facing Higher Education and the challenges that these would present to students, the University established the department of Student Support & Guidance. The department co-ordinates a range of student services including welfare, disability and specific needs, student development and student discipline services. The department has an excellent record, reflected in a number of QAA commendations, Matrix accreditation the award in December 2008 of 5* Recognition for Excellence, and being shortlisted for the UK Excellence Award in 2011 as well as excellent results in student satisfaction surveys. For some students Induction will be their first experience of University and it is essential that they are introduced to the full range of academic and support services across the University. A welcoming, well-structured, participative and informative induction process can be the first step in supporting both student retention and achievement. The University is also exploring initiatives to enhance support and help for students during the pre-entry and transition phases of their engagement with higher education. The Induction team also organise two development weeks for students providing additional opportunities for students to enhance their student experience. 8. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communication The role holder will communicate daily with staff from all University departments, students, conference visitors, community groups and teams both verbally and in written formats regarding facility usage. As a senior supervisor, the role holder will be required to explain and promote the range of facilities available to users e.g. membership options, health and safety related procedures and inductions. 8.2 Leadership and Motivation The role holder will communicate directly to the Director of Sport and Recreation and will take direction from them on a daily basis, although the role holder will be expected to work independently using set procedures and guidelines. The role holder will be responsible for supervising the work of the Fitness Centre Supervisors and Personal Trainers/Fitness Instructors within their team by organising and completing rotas, sickness records, time sheets etc and to ensure staff are providing high standards of customer care in accordance with SSG policies and procedures. The role holder, with the support of the Director of Sport and Recreation, will recruit, train and supervise the staff within their team.

3 The role holder will co-ordinate induction programmes for new staff. 8.3 Liaison and Networking The role holder will be required to liaise with Grounds and Gardens, Estates and Cleaning Services to ensure that all facility areas are ready for use as required by academic departments, Students Union sports teams, students and external users. 8.4 Service Delivery The role holder will assist in the operation of the University s sport and recreation team in terms of security, cleanliness, safety of customers, emergency procedures and the campus sports and recreation programmes. The role holder will make regular checks on all fitness equipment to ensure that repairs are completed and hygiene is maintained through organising the cleaning of equipment daily. The role holder will assist in ensuring all customers participate safely at all times and adhere to the rules and regulations of Sport and Recreation. The role holder will ensure that the sports facilities and equipment are properly prepared and reinstated according to the programme of activities. The role holder will provide access to the centre by locking and unlocking as required or by controlling the signing in and out of keys. The role holder will input client information and daily facility bookings, following set procedures, efficiently and effectively. Prioritising use in the following order: Academic departments, Students Union sports teams, students and external users. The role holder should ensure that the facility is clean and welcoming at all times and that all users attend an induction, exercise properly and use the equipment safely. The role holder is responsible for co-ordinating the Fitness Instructors in setting up programmes to evaluate and develop customer health and fitness. The role holder will cover for absent colleagues and staff if necessary and adhere to departmental and University policies at all times. The role holder will be responsible for setting up and cashing up the till on a daily basis in accordance with set guidelines and procedures. 8.5 Decision Making The role holder is responsible for supervision of the sports facilities and reporting or escalating issues to the Director of Sport and Recreation. The role holder is expected to work on his/her own initiative using established guidelines and procedures. The role holder will be expected to take independent decisions regarding methods of work etc that impact on the daily operation of the Sports and Recreation facilities e.g. staff breaks, ensuring the completion of assigned tasks.

4 The role holder will be expected to collaborate with the Director of Sport and Recreation to agree issues around the operational working of the Fitness Suite etc., The role holder will be expected to make recommendations to the Director of Sport and Recreation on, for example, purchase of equipment e.g. Kettle Bells. 8.6 Planning and Organising Resources As a senior supervisor, the role holder will plan and organise the work of the Sports and Recreation team. The role holder is not a budget holder, however is expected to justify requests for expenditure (e.g. purchases of new equipment) as part of the annual business planning process. The role holder will assist the Director of Sport and Recreation to ensure correct financial procedures are undertaken in relation to both income generation and expenditure. The role holder will support internal and external marketing initiatives and promotions to achieve maximum utilisation of facilities. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) The role holder will be required to deal with day to day problems as they arise e.g. double bookings or customer complaints as well as staffing issues. The role holder will be responsible for pre-empting issues, identifying and implementing solutions to staffing and operational problems in accordance with set procedures and guidelines, referring more complex matters to the Director of Sport and Recreation. 8.8 Analysis and Research The role holder will collate customer data (e.g. daily usage, membership details, customer contracts) for the Director of Sport and Recreation. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands Due to the nature of the work, the role holder should be physically fit and able to assist in the moving of large and heavy items of equipment. Duties are based both indoors and outdoors Work Environment The role holder will be required to work in various locations both inside and outside. The facilities managed are of varying age and condition. The environment will generally be pleasant and clean. The role holder is responsible for maintaining health and safety standards throughout the centre and other sports facilities and ensuring compliance with all relevant rules and regulations. The role holder will assist in carrying out risk assessments in accordance with the Health and Safety procedures.

5 To ensure compliance with emergency procedures i.e. first aid, fire, COSHH etc, and to ensure that up to date records are completed and processed appropriately i.e. Accident Report Forms, Incident Report Forms etc Pastoral Care and Welfare The role holder will be responsible as the first point of contact for the welfare and discipline of their team, referring to the Director of Sport and Recreation as required. The role holder will conduct Return to work interviews as required Team Development The role holder will induct new members of the team. 8 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT SPORTS AND RECREATION SENIOR FITNESS SUPERVSIOR SALARY SCALE University Scale OS7, points 23-26, 25,769-28,143 per annum payable monthly in arrears. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOURS OF WORK Monday to Thursday 9.00am pm Friday 9.00am pm A flexible approach to work will be required as there may be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years), rising to 27 days after five years' continuous service. Two extra statutory days per annum during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualifications as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University operates two pension schemes for support staff: The default scheme is the Higher Education Defined Contribution Scheme (HEDCS), which is administered by Friends Life. The Cheshire Local Government Pension Scheme, to which the University is an admitted body. All support staff are entitled to participate in one of these schemes. Some staff will be automatically enrolled into a scheme, depending on their age and earnings, but if they do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
