10 Objectives of this module Learn about financial and economic challenges and opportunities of IUWM Learn how to do a financial and economic analysis of an IUWM strategy Learn how to use financial and economic analysis in the design of IUWM strategies and projects that are financially feasible are cost-efficient yield the highest economic return are risk and uncertainty robust and adaptive

11 Economics and Finance The Economic and Financial Module are part of the larger IUWM toolkit Stakeholder Engagement Understanding the key stakeholders and their interests is crucial in assessing the distribution of impacts of an IUWM project, as well as the design of funding solutions based on contributions from beneficiaries. Diagnostics Knowing the shortcomings of local IUWM components and the related urban systems is valuable in finding ways to maximize benefits by combining functions. Water Balance Model Understanding the impacts of IUWM projects on water quantity and water quality is required in the assessment of costs and benefits. Technology Selection The technology generates the cash and non-cash impacts. The technology selection should therefore be informed by an assessment of the financial feasibility and economic value of various alternatives. Building Effective Institutions Effective institution require a robust economic foundation and a solid business case. In addition, governance and contracting solutions can contribute to effective institutions.

Marondera, Zimbabwe Activities IUWM appraisal mission has been conducted AfDB has funded $2,200,000 to the Republic of Zimbabwe to support the development of an IUWM Masterplan for Marondera Municipality IUWM team will support the development of IUWM Masterplan Madagascar Activities AfDB has funded $2,000,000 to develop sanitation master plans for eight cities IUWM team will provide technical advice on how to integrate IUWM in to the sanitation master plan under development.
