11 Research-based Predictors: Protective Factors Research has identified protective factors in four domains: Family; School; Community; and Peer and individual. Protective factors buffer young people s exposure to risk.

13 Research-based Predictors: Risk Factors Research has identified risk factors in four domains: Family; School; Community; and Peer and individual. Risk factors are predictive of higher levels of adolescent substance abuse, delinquency, teen pregnancy, school drop-out and violence. 3

14 What Research Has Shown About Risk and Protective Factors They exist in all areas of children s lives. They predict diverse behavior problems. The more risk factors present, the greater the chances of problem behavior. They can be present throughout development. Risk factors are buffered by protective factors. They work similarly across racial groups. Prevention efforts should address both risk and protection. 4

15 Tested, Effective Prevention Strategies Are: Programs, policies or practices that have demonstrated effectiveness in: Reducing specific risk factors and enhancing protective factors. Enhancing positive behaviors and reducing negative behaviors. 5
