4 TRAINING CALENDAR MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7 TIME SESSION 9:00-12:00 The Cost of Caring: Understanding how burnout, compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress can impact team productivity and quality of service delivery. Compassion fatigue has been called a disorder that affects those who do their work well. Compassion fatigue and secondary trauma are characterized by deep emotional and physical exhaustion, a shift in a professional s sense of hope and optimism about the future and the value of their work. The level of compassion fatigue a helping professional experiences can ebb and flow from one day to the next. Even very healthy individuals with optimal life/work balance and self care strategies can experience a higher than normal level of compassion fatigue when they are overloaded, are working with traumatic content, or find their case load suddenly heavy with individuals who are all chronically in crisis. Over time, this can lead to increased sick time, a decline in the quality of service delivery and clinical errors. While self-care practices and increased attention to achieving work-life balance have been touted as the most effective approaches to reducing burnout and compassion fatigue, recent research has shown that they have limited effect. This session will present the current state of research on the most effective evidence-based practices to address compassion fatigue, secondary trauma and burnout. Françoise Mathieu, M.ED., CCC. RP The Compassion Fatigue Workbook, by Françoise Mathieu 1:00-4:00 Essential grounding and debriefing skills for front line staff The pace, content and competing demands of the modern workplace have left many of our staff operating in constant stress and overdrive. This elevated stress state is exacerbated by added pressures and trauma exposure. Eventually, service providers can find themselves shutting down and numbing out; our bodies were simply not built to function in this high-energy state for extended periods of time. As a result, we see many negative physical, emotional, behavioural and relational consequences in the workplace. This session will provide skills to help you and your staff become more centered amongst the chaos. Developing grounding skills is crucial for front-line workers and others working with forensic evidence, investigations, court, with witnesses and victims and those working with individuals who have experienced difficult and traumatic experiences.
