2 INTRODUCTION The Southeast College has partnered with the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) and the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) to deliver dynamic and informational business workshops that will help employees to build on their core business, supervisory and leadership skills. A number of training opportunities will take place during annual conventions and will also be delivered at strategic locations throughout the province of Saskatchewan.

3 MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The business courses provided by Southeast College are ideal for aspiring, new and current supervisors or managers. These courses will help learners improve their management acumen through practical, skill-oriented business training. This training is provided through interactive workshopstyle classes led by leading edge instructors who will challenge and build the learner s core business, leadership and management skills. The training is structured with three levels. Each level is comprised of a minimum of 35 credit hours. After completing each level, employees will receive a joint certificate issued from their municipal organization and the Southeast College. Modules can be taken in any order. Class size for management workshops must be limited to 25 participants due to the interactive style of the workshops. This number is adhered to in order to give the learner the best possible learning experience. In order to accommodate larger number of participants, additional instructors and classrooms will be utilized. Programs described in this brochure may be subject to change. Most unproductive meetings can be attributed to a lack of planning, execution or follow-up. This seminar in conducting effective meetings focuses on the three key stages of holding a meeting and how to ensure that yours is productive and successful. Module 1: Before the Meeting Module 2: The Role of the Chairperson Module 3: The Participant s Role Module 4: Putting Meetings into Practice PRES 208: Presentation Skills (14 hours) In any business environment we are constantly called upon to make presentations. Anytime you present a product to someone, an idea to a co-worker or your boss, you are making a presentation. On some occasions you may even be asked to make a more formal presentation in front of a group. Whenever you make a presentation, it reflects on you as a professional. This course will provide you with the tools you need to ensure your presentations are effective. You will have an opportunity to plan, prepare for, and make a presentation in front of a group. This presentation will be videotaped so you can personally see your strengths and areas requiring improvement. 6 ADMINISTRATIVE LDSH 208: Leadership Skills (14 hours) Leadership is the art of motivating and inspiring people to work toward shared aspirations. It requires solid character and highly developed communication skills. This course covers important leadership topics and will help you to hone your skills in the following areas: personal awareness and consciousness, developing and communicating a vision, influencing others, championing change and maintaining morale. We will examine the characteristics of successful leaders and identify what authentic leadership looks like. We will also spend time differentiating between vision, mission, operating principles and goals, while assessing common strategies for facilitating innovation and creativity. 7 MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS COMM 218: Communicating Effectively (14 hours) With so many methods of communication available to us today, it s difficult to know how, when or what to communicate in order to get your message across in the most effective manner. This course focuses on honing your interpersonal communication skills so you ll be able to confidently communicate in the workplace with power and purpose. Module 1: Foundations of Communication Module 2: Interpersonal Communication Module 3: Group Communication Module 4: Communicating In Today s World PERS 121: Time Management and Organizational Skills (7 hours) Improving your skill in time management entails understanding how competing demands can fracture your attention and undermine your productivity. Equally important is learning to manage priorities and follow through on a personal system for time management. Upon completion of this seminar you will leave well-equipped with a tool kit of templates and proven strategies for effectively managing your time. 8 ADMINISTRATIVE PERS 139: Assertiveness for Personal and Business Success (14 hours) Learn how assertive behaviour can positively impact your overall personal effectiveness, communications and relationships with others. Discover that by behaving assertively, you will gain more self-confidence and selfrespect, develop personal power, cultivate and maintain cooperation and respect of others, and minimize unhealthy conflict. Through various learning methods, you will learn to apply different types of assertive skills in various situations including giving and receiving feedback, managing conflict, providing information to others, responding to questions, and saying no without feeling guilty, so that the ultimate outcome will be effective communications and relationships in both your personal and business life. Module 1: Defining Assertion Module 2: Exploring Obstacles to Assertion Module 3: Describing Assertive Skills Module 4: Applying Assertive Skills BLAW 203: Basic Business Law (14 hours) A basic knowledge of Business Law is critical to the operation of any business in today s world. Whether you are a business owner, supervisor or manager it is essential to have an understanding of the legal issues facing business. This course will provide you with a basic overview and understanding of various legal issues such as forms of business organizations, liability and negligence, contract law, employment law, Human Rights law, credit and collections, the Sale of Goods and Insurance, Health, and Safety Law. Module 1: Business Organizations and Contract Law Module 2: The Law of Negligence and Liability Module 3: Employment Law and Human Rights Legislation Module 4: Credit, Collections, and the Sale of Good Module 5: Insurance Law, and Health and Safety Legislation 7

Module 3: The Marketing Mix Module 4: Creating and Implementing a Marketing Plan Module 5: Building your Own Marketing Plan MGMT 217: Conflict Management (14 hours) Conflict is a normal and expected aspect of working together; it exists in human relationships at work as well as in other areas of our lives. Handled poorly, conflict can damage relationships, lower morale and impact productivity. Handled effectively, it can create opportunities for collaboration, effective resolution and healthy change through patience and communication. This conflict management course will help you determine the best approach to workplace conflicts and challenging situations. You will learn to apply an intervention and resolution framework based on a collaborative, interestbased conflict management approach. You will also be provided with tools that will assist you in managing conflict and challenges more effectively.
