Red Gold is Our Business (lat. aurum rubrum -red gold) Aurubis Bulgaria AD is ranked first for overall production output in the metal industry in the country and is the leading copper producer in Southeastern Europe. The company is part of the Aurubis Group with its headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, and divisions in five other countries (Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Great Britain and Slovakia). Approximately 780 employees work at Aurubis Bulgaria and a total of 4,700 for Customers of the Aurubis Group include companies in the copper semis industry, the electrical engineering, electronics and chemical industries, as well as suppliers of the construction and car industries. Our production process in Pirdop is distributed across several production units: smelter, refinery, acid production and floatation. The main emphasis in the company falls on the processing of copper concentrates, the production of copper anodes and cathodes as well as by-products, such as sulfuric acid and fayalite. 3

4 Five Decades of Corporate History September 1958 start-up of the plant September 1997 the state-owned company MDK is privatized and becomes part of the Belgium industrial group Union Minière (later Umicore) April 2005 the Bulgaria, Belgium and Italy based copper plants are carved out from Umicore into the independent copper producer Cumerio April 2008 Cumerio is acquired by Norddeutsche Affinerie (NA), Hamburg (Germany), after approval was received from the European Commission at the beginning of the year. April 2009 the company is officially renamed to Aurubis Bulgaria. A Visit to our Company Unlike the complex copper route, our plant is easy to reach. 6 We Invest in Best Technologies Our investments Since privatization in 1997, capital expenditure over the last few years on the plant has exceeded 350 million. Creating a Secure Environment and a Healthy and Safe Workplace is our key to success. We focus on two major flows: We Care for the Air Aurubis Bulgaria commissioned a hightechnology gas cleaning system on May 15th, 2008, under the motto We Care for the Air, to comply with the future environmental regulations with an appropriate safety margin. The new installation consists of dry and wet scrubbers for the off-gases from the anode furnace and the flash furnace respectively and a new bag filter for secondary emissions. This project involved capital expenditure of more than 12.5 million. 7 State-of-the-Art The tankhouse in Pirdop is the most modern cathode production facility in Southeastern Europe. This cost-effective and environmentally sound installation is designed to produce 180,000 tonnes of copper cathodes per year. It combines the latest technology for the production of electrolytic copper together with proven best practice from other plants. Construction started in August 2006, and the first copper cathode left the facility at the beginning of July 2008 only 22 months later. The tankhouse is considered as the largest industrial investment in the country in 2008, amounting to approximately 82 million.
