16 Perspective In the academic year 2011/2012 in Poland there were 460 higher education institutions in which a total of million people were educated. After 1989, during the first six years of the transformation, the number of students has increased almost fivefold. In 2010, 74% of Poles under 25 years of age or above were enrolled in or after such education and had qualifications entitling them to study (passed maturity exam), which accounted for 52% of the total age group.
